Sandals praises ‘green’ attitude Dancing the night away Blyth’s annual Lighting of the Lights ceremony took a turn for the warm and dry when it was moved indoors due to high winds and rain on Sunday night. After the Blyth United Church Choir performed, a number of couples from Blyth East Side Dance Studio decided to strut their stuff in the lower floor of Memorial Hall. When asked about the amalgamation and the effect it is having on this rural communities and similar communities out there, Sandals said the event was not a rural one. “There are lots of schools which are under-utilized that are in a similar situation,” she said, indicating that sagging enrolment numbers aren’t the only reason for amalgamation. She said some older schools are impossible to retrofit for new technology and, when that is paired with lower enrolment, it can lead to issues. She said having these new schools and amalgamating old schools provides better education experiences for the students involved. The green attitude and construction of the school is also something newer, she said, but a practice that rings true with the ministry. She said that as boards are designing new schools and looking at infrastructure, they are making sensible decisions like the decision to utilize as much natural light as possible at Maitland River Elementary School. She explained decisions like that save money not only up front but in the long run as well. “An energy efficient school saves the board money which saves the province money,” she said. Sandals then sat and discussed issues with local Avon Maitland District School Board members before taking her leave from the new school.
