The Huron County 4-H Go for the
Gold team had a very successful trip
to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair
winning the national championship.
Wawanosh 4-H Golden Girls
Organizer Mary-Ellen Foran
explained that the team, which took
off to Toronto for the Go for the
Gold event earlier this month, facedoff against representatives from sixother regions.
To get to the provincial-wide
championship, the team won the
Huron County competition in July
and the regional competition, which
pitted them against teams from
Bruce, Perth and Grey Counties in
August.
On Nov. 2, they competed against
the other regions and Foran said thatthe competition was full of fresh andchallenging material.
“It was based on six or seven clubs
that were different from what we had
at the county and regional level,” she
said. “There was one on wildlife for
example and one on career planning
and writing a résumé.”
The team had its work cut out for
them as beating their competition
wasn’t enough.
“With the six regions in total, you
have to play each region and then a
cumulative score is what determines
ranking,” she explained. “Even if
you knew you were going to win
against a team, you had to be on your
game and get as many points as
possible so you wouldn’t get edged
out of first or second place.”
The last team the Huron squad
took on was from the Halton Region
which they would face again in the
championship.
“They were a tough team,” Foran
said. “We didn’t play them until late
in the tournament and we did beat
them but they were the toughest
competition through the day.”
She said that they had to play them
basically back to back, taking them
on again after beating them and
having a short 10 to 15 minute break. The final score was 165 to 155,which is a fairly tight margin
according to Foran.
“Usually each question is five or
10 points,” she said. “So that could
have been a one- or two-question
difference.”
Having captured the provincial
prize, the team has reached the
highest accolade possible. They will
remain the champs until next
November when a new squad takes
over.
The tournament took pretty much
the entire day that the group was at
the fair, Foran explained, with their
first game at 9:30 a.m. and the final
go until 3:30 p.m.
“We had five to 10 minutes
between each game, it wasn’t a lot of
time,” she said. “We did get see
some of the cattle and what was out
there, which was good because three
or four of the five girls hadn’t been
there before. It’s definitely
something I think they could enjoy
next year if they had more time.”
As for next year, there was some
discussion among the five
members of the team as to who
would like to try and repeat the
achievement, however that is a long
time away.
“Who knows where people are
going to be next year,” Foran said,
adding that some of the girls are
attending post-secondary education
and are out of the area currently.
The team, which consists of
Jolande Oudshoorn, Jeanette
Schramm, Reba Jefferson, Melissa
Higgins and Kate Higgins, will
discuss competing again if they’regoing to try and Go for the Goldonce more.

A man will find any excuse to barbecue, so it was no
surprise that the barbecue played a prominent role in Paul
Willie’s charge, above, at the Belgrave Kinsmen’s breakfast
on Sunday morning at the Belgrave Community Centre.
Willie used the contraption, often reserved for steaks and
hamburgers, for pancakes on the crisp Sunday morning,
and nobody was complaining. Similarly, nothing says
breakfast quite like eggs, so it was the job of Melissa Scott
and Patti Nixon, below, to make sure there were plenty of
them to go around. (Jim Brown photos)
