practising, there isn’t enough of a
pay-off at the end.
“There must be some other Grade
7 and 8 students nearby,” Sandals
said, citing South Huron as a
possible competitor.
The group also talked about what
Sandals called financial literacy. She
said that, in her discussions with
people, she had found people feel
there isn’t enough coursework on
preparing budgets, how mortgages
work, how bank loans work and how
credit cards work. She said it was
especially important for students
entering Grade 12 who, in a year,
could be away at university or
college trying to make ends meet.
McGavin, who is also a student
trustee and works with other student
trustees from across the board, said
she had discussed the issue with the
other trustees and they felt a
program like civics or career
planning should be implemented.
Both civics and career planning
are compulsory programs at Ontario
secondary schools and McGavin
said she would like to see more of an
emphasis on financial systems than
on career planning which is taken in
Grade 10.
“By the time you are in Grade 10,
I think you have a good idea about
what you’re doing,” she said. “We
thought about the fact that we did a
lot surveys in that class. After the
first survey, I understood where I
was at. I think we should take out
some of the surveys and get to know
yourself work and get the business
program in there and make it a
mandatory part.”
Sandals said that was a good idea
but admitted, when asked later, there
is only so much information that can
be fitted into mandatory classes and
there is only so much time for
classes that aren’t specifically
tailored towards a student’s after-
school plan.
QUESTIONS
After speaking with the students,
Sandals addressed the press, talking
on her reactions for the school as
well issues such as bullying and
technology.
“The school is amazing,” she said,
explaining she had worked on build
committees for schools before and
this school has definite function and
thoughts about design.
She said she was really impressedwith the special education room and
called it “really impressive.”
“Secondary schools sometimes
have rooms half the size of that, here
there is a very big room” she said.
“The space is big enough for both
the physical and intellectual needs
that students in a special education
class might have,” Sandals said,
adding it is well designed.
She was also impressed with thenatural light the school has, stating it
was practical and interesting.
She said it was a key example of
how careful the board was with its
finances when building the school.
She also said the technology in the
school made her happy and that
seeing students have access to top of
the line technology made her very
