NHL alumni trump Ironmen counterparts 10-8Continued from page 8traded on and off the ice,”Bloemberg said, “I don’t know all
the guys out there, but the ones I did
play with were high quality calibre
guys, so there were a lot of good
memories.”
While it’s hard to teach an old dog
new tricks, he said, one can learn to
appreciate what the former NHLers
do with puck control, and that
they’re always moving their feet,
they’re in constant motion.
Serving as captain for the NHL
Alumni was Rick Vaive. He said it
was a lot of fun playing in a small
centre like Wingham.
“We do a lot of these in small
towns like this, most of them not as
small as this, but the support you get
is incredible,” he said. “And, like
tonight, you get a great crowd and all
the money is in support of minor
hockey.”
He said the most of the places they
play in the money goes towards the
Special Olympics or law
enforcement.
“In some places we’ve drawn as
many as 2,500 to 3,000 people,” he
said. “It’s wonderful that we can do
this and give back.”
He said that he always has fun
playing hockey, no matter who they
are playing against.
“It’s a great game, I still love to
play,” he said. “Unfortunately, the
next day I’m always a lot sorer than
I used to be. Nonetheless, it’s a
chance to play with the guys he used
to play against or with and they all
have a good time,” he said.
“We’re in a situation where we
play in the best league in the world
and we have an opportunity to bring
the amount of people into an arena to
raise money for something. It’s
pretty special in order to do that,”said Vaive.Serving as a coach of the NHL
Alumni team was Walter Gretzky
who said it was wonderful to be able
to play in a small town like
Wingham.
“I grew up in a little village next to
the river with less than 500 people so
I know what it’s like, it’s just
wonderful,” he said.
He said the support in the smaller
communities is greater than in the
larger centres because one knows the
people for whom the funds are being
raised.According to Gretzky, it iswonderful travelling with the team
because he gets to meet new people
all across Ontario and one gets to
find out what the sport of hockey
really does.
“It’s like putting Canada together,”
he said.
The second period featured a skills
competition with the Ironmen
Alumni going against the NHL
Alumni.
The final score of the game was
10-8 for the NHL Alumni.
A tough loss
A team of NHL Alumni was in Wingham on Saturday at the
North Huron Wescast Community Complex to take on an
all-star team of former Wingham Ironmen players. The
Ironmen alumni were impressed with the skills of the former
NHLers, and lost the contest by a score of 10-8. (Jim Brown

A little break
With an all-star team of former Wingham Ironmen players
on the ice taking on a team of NHL Alumni, they took some
time in between periods for a skills competition, which
involved skating competitions and shooting contests. (Jim
