Ironmen, NHL
Alumni teams face
off in Wingham
Former NHL players made a stop
at the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex in Wingham
last Saturday evening as they took
on former members of the Wingham
Ironmen.
The NHL Alumni team featured
Mike Pelyk, Dave McIlwain, Gary
Leeman, Lou Franceschetti, Bill
Derlago, Dennis Maruk, Rick Vaive,
Dan Daoust, Brent Gretzky, Troy
Crowder and goaltender Mark
Laforest. Coaching the team was
Walter Gretzky.
Among those playing for the
Ironmen Alumni were Brian
McNichol of Blyth and Kevin
Deitner of Brussels.
McNichol said that playing
against the former pros was a little
bit faster than what they were used
to. He indicated that the tempo of the
Ironmen Alumni had slowed down
somewhat while the tempo of the
pros was still there.
“Their tempo is still there, I
think,” he said. “Mine’s not.”
McNichol said he was proud to be
selected to play for the Ironmen
alumni team. “I was quite honoured
to play for them,” he said. “It was
lots of fun.”
Deitner said it was an enjoyable
playing against the former NHLers.
“They sure show what we haven’t
got in our own abilities, they’ve got
it all, and it was a lot of fun out there
tonight,” he said.
He said he was honoured to play
for the Ironmen Alumni team. “I
wasn’t expecting a call at all,”
Deitner said, “but they told me they
wanted me to play, so I was thrilled
to be part of it.”
When asked if he learned anything
from the pros, he responded, “I’m
kind of a slow learner, it will take a
lot of games to get up to where they
are.”
One member of the Ironmen
Alumni team who had some NHL
experience and a lot of American
Hockey League experience was Jeff
Bloemberg of Wingham.
He said it had been a while since
he’s played at that level, having been
one for a while.
“There were a lot of guys on that
side that I used to play against, or
with,” he said. Troy Crowder, Dave
McLlwain, Mark Laforest, Brent
Gretzky, guys with very high skills,
guys who can do pretty good things
on the ice.” He said the game
brought back some memories.
“As you get ready for the game
you think back to the times you
played with them and some of the
experiences you had together and
some great memories that were

Walter Gretzky, father of Wayne and coach of the NHL Alumni team, took a time-out after the
game to sign autographs for people at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex. In an
interview with The Citizen, Gretzky said he loved coming to small communities for alumni
games because the response is so much better than it is in larger city centres. (Jim Brown photo)

Patriots in Western Junior C Hockey
League play at the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex last
Friday.
Jamie Huber scored two goals and
earned an assist as the Ironmen
scored a 6-3 decision over the

two assists while Brett Brophy
collected three assists. Also scoring
for the Ironmen were Justin Jacklin,
Connor Johnson with his first career
Junior C goal, and Travis
Donaldson. Earning single assists

and Mitch Betts. Mount Forest
outshot Wingham 42-32 and the
Ironmen were 3-5 on the power play.
Jaden Shrier earned the decision in
the Wingham net.
Ironmen coach Louie Livingston
said they were able to get another
victory against the Patriots to make
up for the previous weekend's
setback in Mount Forest.
“They play a chippy game,” he
said “That takes away from our
game.”
According to the coach, the power
play was working in the game as
