The farmers shifted into full gear
the middle of last week. A few days
without rain and to the fields they
did go. Acres of corn have been
taken off with some operations
running 24 hours a day. The threat of
more rain and snow had everyone
working non-stop to try and get the
crops in. Some farmers were taking
soybeans as well as corn in the three
“good” days last week. Some are
ploughing, moving manure and
others busy washing up equipment
and putting it away for another year.
Town folks were also busy on the
nice days. I witnessed many raking
leaves, some cutting lawns (or
leaves) and some putting up their
Christmas decorations. It’s hard to
believe, but it is only 10 days until
the Santa Claus Parade in Brussels
and then just 25 days more until
Christmas. I will admit that I have
been very tardy with my Christmas
shopping this year and even good
ideas for gifts have been few and far
between. Hopefully, I will become
enlightened and will find some time
to shop.
Congratulations to Chad and
Kristen Fischer on the birth of their
third child. They welcomed a second
little girl, Isla Rose, to their family.
Older siblings Liam and Adel are
very happy with her arrival. Isla
makes the seventh grandchild for
Murray and Marlene Fischer.
Congratulations to Dave and
Brenda Linton on the arrival of their
fourth grandchild. Daughter Stacey
and her husband Joe Courtney have
added a second son to the family.
Big brother Sheldon is very excited
and happy to have a new brother they
are calling Malcolm David.
Congratulations to the Brussels
Optimist Club on hosting another
successful Harvest dinner. The
numbers were down slightly because
many men were working in the
fields, but takeouts were up.
The Walton Hall was the place for
the annual meeting of the Chesley
Saddle Club. They enjoyed a pot
luck meal and then the meeting and
a social time together.
Our get-well wishes go to Laura
Barbour. She has suffered a broken
hip but is coming along well. Have a
speedy recovery Laura!
Congratulations to Fred and Heidi
McClure on celebrating their 30th
wedding anniversary. Their children
surprised them when a limo arrived
on Saturday evening to take them fordinner. The family went to Fellini’sRestaurant in Stratford for acelebratory dinner. Fred and Heidi
were joined by their children Darrell
and guest, Jennifer and Marco and
Adam, and Heidi’s mother Hannah
Nater of Mitchell.
The congregation of Duff’s United
Church had a guest speaker lead the
service in Rev. Peter’s absence. Rev.
Neil Lackey, a Presbytery Pastoral
Support Minister, presented an
overview of why we are stepping
into change. A video on “Building
Trust” was also shown as part of the
presentation.
Annelies Ringgenberg greeted
those attending. Heidi McClure read
the scripture passage. The collection
was accepted by Teresa Baan and
Michael Craig.
The grocery tapes from Zehrs need
to be turned in and tallied as soon as
possible. The receipts will be gifted
to the Food Bank. Zehrs have a new
policy and are discontinuing the
program as of Dec. 31. The
Christmas decorating of the church
will be carried out on Nov. 30 at 1
p.m. Again, the assistance of one and
all makes a job go much faster.
Please join and help.
On Sunday, Dec. 1, we celebrate
White Gift Sunday. All gifts will be
directed to the Huron County
Christmas Bureau. They are asking
for clothing, pajamas, socks,
underwear, games, toys, jeans,
electronics etc. Gift cards and
monetary donations are also readily
accepted, with cheques made out to
the Children’s Benefit Fund.
The UCW ladies Christmas party
is being held on Dec. 4. A turkeydinner is being catered by HighCreek Farms. It is short notice, butyou must contact Heidi McClure or
Gloria Wilbee and book your plate
by Nov. 22. The cost will be $17.

the women’s shelter will be
collected.
The choral concert is being hosted
by Walton this year and is on Dec. 8
Attendance down, takeouts up at Optimist dinner

Michael McDonald, left, and Trevor Wilson were two of the most important men at work Friday
night for the Brussels Optimist Club’s annual harvest dinner at the Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre as they were on steak-cooking duty. Due to ideal harvest conditions,
attendance at the dinner was down slightly, while takeout orders were slightly higher than they
had been in the past. (Jim Brown photo)
