Local groups could use a hand November is slipping away in typical style – damp in many forms with variable temperatures. The cold and wet gets us ready for the days ahead that are full of rest and restoration of the earth and plants. November is a time to think and plan for the spring ahead, but in the days of now, it’s thought not action that is needed. The exception is the corn and beans still in the fields this year. Villages have a unique spot in the scheme of things, our choice of home gives us special options. Some of the people in community we know very well, probably worked with them on a project or two. We know others by association, knowing someone who knows them, and then there are others who comeinto our lives, like a new chapter inour book of life. Maybe we are trying something new or a new person moves here or they are trying to meet others and we connect. Each encounter a new opportunity, mixing people old or new connecting for a cause, getting to know each other. So using these days of November to figure where your interests lie, you can choose your part of community. Some causes are near and dear, others are more complicated – your choice. Volunteers are needed for the library fund work, the horticulture gang can use your energy, the churches are always welcoming to new folks, the Legion, Lions and Optimists can help you find your niche. Many other groups do good things, some perhaps you’d forgotten. Just name your interest and offer your time. This is community, offering your skills to others and knowing that a group effort is much more effective for the common good. The Anne of Green Gables story is timeless and watching the performance on Saturday at Centre in the Square was enjoyable. Lara, Jordan, Robyn and Jill saw UncleJohn in a new light as KW MusicalProductions, in its 65th year, shoneonce again the talents of their volunteers. A ministry collar or the kilt were not enough to hide he was a Watson. The girls adjusted to the time warp well as the singing and dancing brought the story together. Bye now, Betty G.W. By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 A NOTE FROM BETTY NEWS FROM BRUSSELS By Jo-Ann McDonald It was the first usual week of activities at the Brussels Legion Branch following Remembrance Day. The Thursday night dart league had its second night of play with a nice crew of darters taking aim at the boards. Winners were: first, Ron Schmidt and Catrina Josling; second, Roger McHardy and Greta Zehr; high shot - men, Ron, 140 and women - Daisy Schmidt, 117. Anyone is welcome to come out and join the fun for a minimal cost of a buck. We are pleased to hear Comrade George Adams is back to Seaforth Hospital and hopefully will soon be home after suffering a fall last week. He will certainly be taking it easy for a while. He suffered a severe blow to the head in the fall. The Friday night supper was sweet and sour meatballs and was enjoyed by a small crowd. This week will be roast beef. The Branch was very busy on Saturday with the Cadets having range practice in the morning, the men’s Huron County darts competition was held upstairs in the afternoon and euchre was held downstairs. There were 11-and-a-half tables of players at euchre. Winners were: high, Jim Devereaux and Earl McNaughton, 91; second high, Dorothy Carter and Joann MacDonald, 71; third, tied, Tom and Eileen Sloan and John and Iola Subject, 71; lone hands, Shirley Gilders and Dianne Weber, six; low, Doris Muir and Grace Corbett, 45. This is a reminder that the Branch is still collecting pop tabs. They are used to support the wheel chair program administered by the Elora Branch. Drop off your tabs at the Branch. The Branch had the Christmas lights put up on the weekend – thanks to Comrade Jim Brown. The Sunday night dancers enjoyed the music of Tri Country Band. There were over 75 dancers having a great time. Comrades Judy Lee, Keith Mulvey, Mabel Glanville, Jo- Ann McDonald and Mary Bradshaw ran things very smoothly. The early bird program will soon be over. Comrades have until the end of November to pay their dues at the reduced rate. Drop in today and be an early bird. A reminder that silent auction items need to be dropped at the Branch as soon as possible. The auction is this Saturday.
