Morris-Turnberry Fire Prevention Officer James Marshall has started a special organization to better educate Huron County residents of the dangers of fire and other environmental hazards. Marshall explained to Morris-Turnberry Council during their Nov. 5 meeting, that he spearheaded the creation of the Huron County Fire Prevention Officer Association, an organization that currently includes fire prevention officers Marshall and Don Egan from North Huron. The association, however, isn’t limiting itself to those twomunicipalities. “I wanted to look at maximizing my budget for fire prevention and education media,” he said. “Speaking to the chiefs, I figured that, instead of everyone putting out different information at different times, we can focus on one issue per year.” Marshall explained he had $500 in his budget to cover that, but, by speaking to the chiefs and a local insurance group, he raised $11,000 to advertise across the county. He suggested to council he be allowed to add that $500 and explained the association would really help in getting information out to the public regarding fire safety. Council agreed to funding the initiative. Marshall then explained the organization would be promoting smoke alarm awareness this month and that, when Daylight Savings Time ends in March, the groupwould likely be looking at carbon monoxide detectors. He also said the group plans to have a website as one of the major donors, the Perth-Huron Insurance Brokers, who contributed $4,000 to the cause, would be able to help more in the future if there was a web presence. “Once that’s going, as we’re visiting the different houses in the community for fire initiatives, we can direct them to information that will be consistent across the county,” Marshall said. Mayor Paul Gowing stated he thought this was good news. “This is a great story,” he said. “Thank you for spearheading it. This is just plain common sense and, now that the funds have appeared, they’re definitely going to be used in a more productive way than they would have been by individual organizations.” The Fire Department of North Huron (FDNH) will be partnering with Morris-Turnberry Fire Prevention Officer James Marshall on two different projects in the coming months. According to reports to Morris- Turnberry Council during its Nov. 5 meeting, the FDNH will be sharing not only manpower and expertise with Marshall to run a smoke alarm inspection campaign but also sharing and taking advantage of Marshall’s expertise alongside its own fire prevention officer, Don Egan. Marshall explained to Morris- Turnberry that North Huron had offered, through two different programs, to help enrich the fire protective services in Morris- Turnberry by working together. The fire alarm inspection program will see North Huron Firefighters, some accompanied by Marshall, and some not, go throughout Morris- Turnberry visiting homes to replace dead batteries or expired smoke detectors and make sure smoke detectors are placed on every floor of the buildings in the area. There will be an amnesty period attached to the project, according to Marshall, meaning people who don’t have the proper amount of home fire protection can receive it free of charge without worry of being By Linda Campbell Call 357-2188 PEOPLE AROUND BELGRAVE NEWS FROM BELGRAVE Ontario Energy Board Commission de l’énergie de l’Ontario NOTICE OF APPLICATION GAS FRANCHISE AGREEMENT AND CERTIFICATE OF PUBLIC CONVENIENCE AND NECESSITY FOR THE MUNICIPALITY OF HURON EAST UNION GAS LIMITED EB-2013-0371 EB-2013-0372 On October 22, 2013, Union Gas Limited (“Union”) filed an application with the Ontario Energy Board under the Municipal Franchises Act for an order approving the terms and conditions upon which, and the period for which, the Corporation of the Municipality of Huron East is, by by-law, to grant to Union the right to operate works and add to works for the distribution of gas in the Municipality of Huron East for a period of 20 years, and for an order declaring and directing that the assent of the municipal electors is not necessary.
