Christmas Bureau to open
Route
ends,

upset
Members of the Goderich Lions
Club approached North Huron
Township Council during at the Nov.
4 meeting seeking funding to keep
Camp Klahanie operational.
The camp been a big pat of Girl
Guides and youth groups in the area
recently and Gord Grant, one of the
committee chairs for the camp,
explained their story was a “good,
win-win” one.
Back in the early 1970s, Grant
explained, John and Marion
Hindmarsh donated just under eight
acres of land to the Girl Guides at
Blacks Point Road, just south of
Goderich near the lake.
For 40 years the Girl Guides, with
the assistance of major supporters
like the Goderich Lions Club, have
grown, maintained and used the
camp.
Those times came to an end, however, as Grant explained, whenthe Girl Guides of Canada, based out
of Toronto, decided to close several
camps, including Camp Klahanie.
Despite the best efforts of local
Girl Guides, both former and
current, the camp was closed down.
The organization then would not sell
the camp to the Lions Club until
after serious negotiations only made
possible by the donation of
“hundreds” of hours of free legal
work done by the Ross Firm in
Goderich.
“The Ross Firm donated over
$60,000 of legal fees on top of the
$16,000 the Lions picked up in legal
fees,” Grant said. “But we did
acquire the camp.”
Grant said that, after the Lions
purchased the camp for $110,000
earlier this year, it may seem like a
happy ending, but the story for the
camp was just beginning.
After buying the camp, theorganization found some workneeded to be done as it was left to
decline since 2009, when the camp
was closed. Rooves of the washroom
and lodge buildings, as well as a
breezeway between accessory
buildings, needed to be replaced and
other problems, like the lack of
separate washrooms for boys and
girls, needed to be dealt with
especially since, as Mike Alcock of
the Lions explained, the Lions want
to open the camp to all youth
groups.
They also stated the current camp
model, which has visitors use tents
for overnight accommodations, was
one they helped to change and stated
that, if there was a demand, they
would hope to make sleeping
quarters.
Councillor Brock Vodden stated
he would like to see the camp
advertised in North Huron’s
recreation guides and on the websitewhile Councillor Bernie Baileyaddressed the issue of financing
more directly.
“As a former Cub and Cub leader,
Scout and Scout leader, Venture and
Pack leader and an adult leader with
my son, I wish you all the best,” he
said. “Leave us the information and
we’ll mull it over. Issues like theseare always a money issue forcouncil, but we will look at it.”
Reeve Neil Vincent thanked the
presenters for the information
and said it would be part of
council’s upcoming budget
discussions.
THE EDITOR,
The Huron County Christmas
Bureau is managed completely by
volunteers with various
communities in Huron County
hosting bureaus at Christmas time
each year. The churches in Wingham
take turns hosting the northern
bureau consisting of Wingham,
Brussels, Belgrave, Bluevale,
Lucknow, Wroxeter, Gorrie and
Fordwich.
The Huron-Perth Children’s Aid
Society provides administration,
management and technical support
for this project. The bureau is non-
denominational. It belongs to the
community.
This service is available to any
disadvantaged family in Huron
County with children aged 18 and
younger. Confidentiality is of utmost
importance and volunteers are
trained annually. When a call is
received, a confidential appointment
is set up at the closest bureau to
where the family lives. Parents
“shop” for their children, choosing
gifts of age appropriate clothing and
toys from the donated and purchased
gifts. Volunteers at each bureau
ensure there is a selection of new
clothing and toys to choose from.
Last year, 112 families and 219
children used the Wingham
Christmas Bureau.
Donations of cash, clothing and
toys may be dropped off at Wingham
United Church, 217 Minnie St,
Wingham between Dec 2 and 6
(Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. - 5
p.m.) for distribution the following
week.
Families in need must pre-register
and can do so by calling Nov. 18 to
Dec. 6 at 519-524-7356 extension
3271 or 1-800-265-5198 extension
3271.
Sincerely,
Norm Ladouceur,
