would be more likely to get funding
with a smaller amount requested.
Council approved the selection for
the Nov. 1 deadline. A final decision
on whether North Huron will receive
funding will be announced by
February of 2014.
Chief Financial Officer for North
Huron Donna White explained that
there was $71 million available for
projects in this round of funding.
“That’s not going to go very far
against many of these projects,” she
said.
The fund is accessible to any
municipality whose population is
under 100,000. She had told council
that they could apply for the maxi-
mum 90 per cent of the maximum
project value of $2 million to help
cover the majority of the project,
however, councillors felt taking the
lesser amount would give them a
higher chance of being approved.
According to a press release from
North Huron, the project will
include curb and gutter system
upgrades and the new storm water
system will allow residents along
the project route to connect their
submersible pumps to the
storm sewer to prevent property
damage.
During the meeting, White also
explained that the township was for-
tunate to be offered an additional
$22,000 from the provincial govern-
ment to finish their Asset
Management Plan. Council passed a
motion accepting the money and
will have to have the plan completed
by Oct. 31.
The plan will be helpful, if not
necessary, for future infrastructure
funding applications.

Houston family’s last message to remain sealedContinued from page 10had the pleasure of visiting localAuburn historian Jim Schneider.Jim and his wife Dorothy live in oneof the old general stores of Auburn’syesteryear where they keep a won-derful collection of local artifactsand memorabilia from the area. Iwas there focusing on a scrapbookJim and Dorothy had to put together
from Mary Clark’s (Houston) estate.
Mary was James’ sister and she had
kept every bill, letter, card, certifi-
cate and church record her family
had ever received. Jim had collected
them and put them all in a book. In
this collection was a valentine’s card
sent to James in England and signed
by many people in the Auburn com-
munity. However what fascinated
me most was one particular envelope
with the postmark of May, 1943 that
was sent to James in England from
his family here in Auburn. I will talk
more about this letter in a moment.
On May 27, 1943 Flight Sergeant
James Houston took off from
Gransden Lodge Airfield with the
Halifax HR 807 squadron at 10:48
p.m. on a mission to Essen,
Germany. Jim Schneider believes
James was a tail-gunner in a
Lancaster bomber. However, like
many young soldiers on these bomb-
ing runs, James did not make it to his
target that night. Flying at an altitudeof 19,000 feet his aircraft was shotdown over Dusseldorf, Germanycausing the Lancaster to crash. TheRed Cross reported that James waskilled at 1:20 a.m. on May 28. Hehad just turned 21 years of age 12days prior to this event. James never received that letter hisfamily mailed him from Auburn on
May, 1943. It arrived at his base on
July 17 but James was already gone.
The letter was then returned
unopened to Auburn on Oct. 6. On
the back of the envelope a label
states, “It is deeply regretted that the
addressee is reported missing on war
service.” The family chose not to
open the returned envelope and
James’ sister, Mary kept the letter
over these many years still sealed in
the envelope. Jim and Dorothy have
the letter now and they tell me as
long as they do, it will remain sealed
with the last message from James’
family still locked away inside.
Throughout Canada there are
many stories like James’ story. They
were young men with dreams for a
great future but who left their fami-
lies here in Canada to fight on our
behalf. James never knew any of us
reading this article today in freedom
but he, and many like him, gave their
life so that we could. I remember.
A mystery
The last words of the family of Auburn Air Force Sergeant James Young Houston, who was
killed in action during World War II, will forever remain sealed as long as they are possessed
by Auburn historian Jim Schneider. The family wrote a letter to Houston, but, before he could
receive it, he was shot down over Germany. (Mark Royall photo)

Fighting for his country
Auburn Air Force Sergeant James Young Houston, shown
above, was shot down over Dusseldorf, Germany during
World War II. The Sergeant had turned 21 just 12 days
before his aircraft was shot down early on May 28. (Photo
