I thought that the nasty weather of
the previous weekend was bad, but
the inches and inches of rain and
wind were certainly no better. I was
surprised when the combines headed
to the fields mid-week after the snow
and rain weekend, but returning to
the fields might take a little longer
this time. We had taken our rain
gauge in, so I have no idea how
much rain fell, but going by the high
water levels around Winthrop and
the Greaves Bridge area, it must
have been lots! The rivers are
flowing fast and hopefully parents
are keeping their children away from
them. Halloween was a very nasty
night and most people I have spoke
to report a decrease in numbers of
trick or treaters. Deer hunting began
on Monday and will last until the
weekend. There is even Sunday
hunting in some areas, so be
prepared, plus it is only seven weeks
until Christmas!
Our community has been
saddened by the loss of three this
past week. Our condolences to the
family of Murray Cardiff on his
passing. Murray will be missed by
his wife of 55 years Betty and
children Jeff, Joan and Scott and
their families. Murray was a soft-
spoken man and a well-respected
farmer and politician. He was the
Conservative Member of Parliament
for Huron Bruce from 1980 until
1993. Murray was a founding
member of the Brussels Optimist
Club which started 40 years ago. He
was active in many of the events
around Brussels, clubs, church and
groups. He helped son Jeff in the
catering business and he enjoyed
holidaying in Florida in the past
years. Our sympathies are extended
to the family and extended families.
Our condolences to George and
Shirley Wheeler on the passing of
their son-in-law Simon McAully.
Simon was the husband of Carol
Wheeler and they resided in
Cambridge. Our sympathies are
extended to Carol and to the
extended family.
Our sympathies are extended to
Eric Ross and Cam Ross on the
passing of their father, Gordon Ross.
Gordon had been a resident of
Braemar in Wingham for the past
few years. He had resided in B.C.
before returning to the area. Our
condolences to the Ross families.
We are pleased to report that
Velma Stephenson has returned to
her home at Huronlea. We hope she
is doing better.
Ian Wilbee is now back at Seaforth
Hospital. He is still undergoing tests
but we hope he is feeling better.
Lavern Godkin is still a patient inSeaforth Hospital. Neil McGavin has been given the
green light and is now out and about
on his own again. He is not back to
full steam and might need to be
reminded to take it easy but it is
great to see him doing so well.
Good news about Margery
Huether. She is almost ready to
come home. She will need help but it
is a good step for her.
The McGavin family was thrilled
to have Jacob home for the weekend.
Jacob is at Mount Allison University
in Sackville, New Brunswick. The
main reason for coming home was
the F.E. Madill commencement,
where Jacob was the recipient of
numerous awards. Congratulations
to Jacob who is the son of Jeff and
Shannon.
Rick and Margaret McInroy have
returned from a two-week holiday
in Pigeon Ford, Tennessee touring
the area. They went to Dollywood
and had an enjoyable time. Welcome
back.
Spending five days in Las Vegas
were Fred and Heidi McClure with
friends Ed and Rose Graul. They
travelled around the area to see some
of the sights like the Hoover Dam.
They went to the Cirque de Soleil
show Mystere and went to old Las
Vegas area. The weather was warm
during the day and cool during the
night. They had a very nice time.
Another couple enjoying a break
in Las Vegas was Jim and Linda
McDonald. They spent five days but
did not run into Fred and Heidi.
They went to see a concert by Meat
Loaf and went to the Brad Garrett
Comedy Club for a show. A new
Cirque de Soleil show has been
created to the music of Michael
Jackson and they enjoyed it. It was
good weather for them to relax andtake it easy. They were there overHalloween and Linda reports they
stayed safe and sound in the hotel
and just watched the crazy costumes.
Lots of sirens all night long. It’s nice
to come home to the quiet of the
country.
I understand it was a little “hot” in
Walton on Saturday night. A fire
started in one of the dryers at Parrish
and Heimbecker and the fire
department was called. I have no
idea of damage but hopefully
everything will be back to working
order by the time the farmers can be
back on the fields.
Members of Duff’s United Church
were greeted to service by Steve and
Teresa Baan. The minute for mission
and the scripture was read by Emma
Baan. Rev. Peter’s sermon was
entitled “Up a Tree” and was about
the story of Zacchaeus. The
collection was taken by Steve Baanand Michael Craig. Rev. Peterremembered those under the weather
including Margery Huether, Ian
Wilbee, Neil McGavin, Lavern
Godkin and Doreen Hackwell.
Communion was served by Steve
and Teresa and Ryan and Adam
Baan. There was coffee and muffins
served following the service by Judy
Lee, Jo-Ann McDonald and Patty
Banks.
Rev. Peter is still collecting pop
cans and returnable bottles for his
project of building a school in SierraLeone. You can drop off donations athis garage.
