November great for reflection
Creepy, crawly crafts
Ashton Baxter was one of the many students at North
Woods Elementary School who enjoyed some Halloween-
themed crafts and activities on Nov. 1. Baxter is shown here
perfecting her spider-themed craft. (Denny Scott photo)
November has arrived and with it,
the damp that seems to set the mood.
If a month was made for
remembering, considering and just
plain thinking, it has to be
November.
The week after Halloween gives
pause for thought as the kids of our
community gave their imagination a
break came to visit in their finery.
The rain had no effect on their
travels, as they celebrated the
evening. All Saints’ Day and All
Souls’ Day followed in a quieter
fashion, but all those specified days
come with history and things to
consider.
Remembrance Day and the poppy
get us thinking about the wars and
the disturbance to family life;
before, during and after. The after-
effects of those wars have been far
reaching as separation, physical andmental health and death laid claim tomany families.
Our church celebrated 137 years
as the Methodist and United Church
in community. Anniversaries are a
time to look back, check the present
and then live into the future. As we
listened to Pastor Sandra Cable, Rev.
Gary Clark and a combined choir
with Blyth United, we thought about
the events over those years, the how
and why of our very being and just
how we got to the 137-year mark.
Celebrations are good, as it gives
folks a chance to remember and
smile, and so often selective
memory kicks in. Being church, of
course we enjoyed lunch and the
company present.
Death always stops us in our
tracks. The end of this life affects all
those we have touched along the
way and leaves folks considering
their own demise. This week
considerable thought has been put
into the lives and deaths of two very
nice men.
Simon McAully, partner of Carol
Wheeler, died. As the other set of
parents George and Shirley Wheeler
have some very good memories of
Simon in their family. For others
music and sound system stories willcause a smile. Friends and familyneed to share their thoughts.
Murray Cardiff has died. Many
will be thinking this week of how
Murray affected their lives. Murray
was a life-long resident of Grey
Township, long before Huron East
came to be. Always a community
advocate and ready to work with
others, Murray would share a story,
an idea or a laugh as he took his part
in the work at hand. So as we
think our November thoughts and
Simon and Murray enter our
consciousness, smile and remember,
then do something for the
benefit of those lives that you may
touch.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

A NOTE FROM BETTY
NEWS
FROM BRUSSELS
At the Branch
Condolences offered as two comrades pass on
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The week began at Brussels
Legion Branch with the Lion’s Club
invite-a-guest night dinner. The
nearly 40 enjoyed a roast pork
dinner. Helping for the Branch was
Mary Bradshaw, Mabel Glanville,
Judy Lee and Jo-Ann McDonald.
Deb Cann did her part as bartender.
The winner of the October early
bird draw for their 2015 dues was
Comrade Nanci Ducharme. There is
one more draw for the month of
November, so drop in today and pay
your dues and get your name in the
draw. We are doing very well with
over half the members of the Branch
being early birds. It makes Comrade
Greg Wilson’s job easier when
everyone tries to pay early. Many
members pay their dues on
Remembrance Day and someone
will be available to accept your dues
and issue receipts.
Our condolences are extended to
the family of Comrade Murray
Cardiff. Murray was a member of
Branch 218 for 15 years and always
supported the Branch when asked.
He will be missed by all. Our
sympathies to wife Betty and
children Jeff, Joan and Scott and
their families.
Our sympathies are extended to
the Ross family on the passing of
Comrade Gordon Ross. He had been
a member of the Royal Canadian
Legion for 35 years and Branch 218
for about five years. He will be
missed by sons Eric and Cam and
their families.
The Friday night supper was
enjoyed by a good crowd of around
35. They enjoyed ham and scalloped
potatoes. This week will be chicken
breast.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 12 tables of players. Winners
were: first, Marie Glousher and
Dorothy Airdrie, 89; second, Paul
and Barb Machan, 80; third, Janet
