Taking a break
Many establishments and organizations have been holding coffee breaks for the Alzheimer
Society of Huron County in recent weeks, so last week it was Cinnamon Jim’s turn in Brussels.
Jim Lee welcomed some special guests to his restaurant on Friday morning in the form of Julie
B. and Nick Sawicki from 101.7 The One, who broadcast live from the Brussels location from
6 a.m. to 10 a.m. that day while raising money for this worthy cause. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
HELEN GOWINGHelen Gowing, a long-time Blythmerchant, village councillor andcultural supporter, died peacefully inher 88th year at Clinton PublicHospital on Monday, October 21,2013.
Mrs. Gowing, with her sister
Evelyn Turvey, ran a women’s
clothing store, The Needlecraft
Shoppe for 28 years, out of the
building now occupied by Blyth
Decor. It was the front portion of the
home she shared with her husband
Norman, who ran a service station
next door where the Blyth Corner
Café now operates.
She served as president of the
Blyth Board of Trade in the early
1970s and it was in that capacity in
1972 that she organized a party of
volunteers to clean and repaint Blyth
Memorial Hall auditorium so it
could be used when the Board of
Trade hosted the Queen of the Fair
pageant for the Blyth Fall Fair. It
was the first step that eventually led
to the renovations that made it
possible for the Blyth Festival to
begin using the building in 1975.
In 1975 she became a member of
the founding board of directors of
Blyth Centre for the Arts, the parent
body of the Blyth Festival, and
served on the board for over 20
years.
She served several terms as a
councillor on the Blyth Village
Council in the later 1970s and early
1980s, one of the first women ever to
serve on village council.
She was also a member of the
Eastern Star in Blyth for many years.
For her community service she
was chosen Blyth’s Citizen of the
Year in 1994.
In recent years she decided she
would like to play a keyboard so she
could entertain herself and she took
lessons, becoming remarkably
accomplished for someone who
started so late in life. When she
moved to Huronview she bought a
small keyboard to take with her.
She was born Helen Turvey on
May 14, 1926, the youngest of eight
children born to the late Robert and
Mary (Woodrow) Turvey who lived
on Con. 2 of Morris Twp., east of
Browntown.
She married Norman Gowing on
Sept. 11, 1943 and they lived in
Brussels until moving to Blyth in
1947 with their oldest daughter,
Gail. He predeceased her on Dec.
29, 2003.
She is survived by her daughters
Gail Chalmers, Kincardine; Glenna,
and her husband Ross Pannabecker,
RR5, Goderich; Carol and her
husband Bob Mommersteeg,
Bayfield; and Kim and her husband
Bill Stride, Breslau. She was the
cherished grandmother of nine
grandchildren and six great-
grandchildren.
Besides her husband she was
predeceased by her sisters Jean
Cook, Adella Shaw, Myrtle Vodden
and Evelyn Turvey, brothers Ross
and Lloyd Turvey and infant brother
Glen Turvey. She was also
predeceased by her son-in-law Wally
Chalmers.
Visitation was held at the Blyth
Chapel of the Falconer Funeral
Homes on Oct. 23. The funeral was
held at the same location, Thursday,
Oct. 24 at 11 a.m.
Interment was in Blyth Union
Cemetery.
As expressions of sympathy
donations may be made to the Blyth
Festival, Blyth United Church or the
charity of one’s choice.
Condolences to the Gowing
family may be forwarded to www.
falconerfuneralhomes.com.

Agnes was born April 21, 1920 in

as a junior nurse in a nearby RCAF

After becoming a widow, she
came to Belgrave to live with her

she got involved with church and

especially enjoyed watching her
grandchildren grow up and was
always delighted to talk with
children and youth about their
lives.
Agnes was the dear mother of
James and Linda Hess of RR 1,
Belgrave and grandmother of
Andrew and Judith Hess. She was
the sister of Anne Drake of Mount
Hope. Agnes was predeceased by
her husband Alfred Hess (1997) and
two infant grandsons Stephen (1994)
and Matthew (2001). She was also
predeceased by two sisters and two
brothers and her brother-in-law
Donald Drake. Visitation was held at

on Saturday, Oct. 19. The funeral
service to celebrate Agnes’ life was
held at Corbett Funeral Home,

Memorial donations to Canadian
Cancer Society or Alexandra Marine
and General Hospital would be
appreciated as expressions of
sympathy.
