North Huron Township Council
has too many questions to rule on
whether they are for or against a
deep geological repository.
Council is welcoming a guest
from Ontario Power Generation to
speak about the deep geological
repository, which will hold low- to
medium-level radioactive waste.
However, after it was revealed that
OPG’s speaker was not representing
the position of a neutral third party,
they permitted one of their own to
find a professional from the other
side of the fence.
After reading Chief
Administrative Officer Gary Long’s
report on the possibility of a nearby
repository, Councillor Archie
MacGowan believed OPG was a
neutral third party in the situation
and felt the organization could
provide good analysis of the
situation.
However, other councillors told
him OPG is involved in the program
seeking to create deep geological
repositories in nearby
municipalities.
Councillor Bernie Bailey, who
was frustrated with council’s slow
adoption of an anti-nuclear stance
after their relatively quick adoption
of an anti-wind stance at its previous
meeting, requested he be permitted
to find an expert to speak against the
repositories so council could hear
both sides of the story.
Bailey has expressed concern not
only with possible contamination of
ground and ground water that could
be caused by the repository, but also
by the increased traffic that would
travel through North Huron if it
were built in a nearby municipality.
While MacGowan was all for that,
he felt council really couldn’t do
much aside from writing a letter in
protest.
“We have no authority over this,”
Repository concern mounts
