The Wingham Ironmen split a pair
of home games in the Western Junior
C Hockey League on the weekend.
Playing at the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex on
Friday evening, the Ironmen fell 5-4
to the Mitchell Hawks in a shootout.
On Saturday evening, the Ironmen
got a three-goal effort from Stulp as
they defeated the Kincardine
Bulldogs 7-4.
Aaron Armstrong contributed two
goals and two assists to the victory
on Saturday. Ryan McNeil and
Justin Jacklin had one goal apiece
for the Ironmen. Brett Brophy and
Jeremy Ross picked up two assists
each. Single helpers were recorded
by Brody TenPas and Jamie Huber.
The Ironmen held period leads of
2-1 and 5-2. Wingham outshot the
Bulldogs 43-31 and the Ironmen
were 3-5 on the power play.Nathan
Watson of Brussels picked up the
win in the Ironmen net.
Coach Louie Livingston said it
was kind of nice to score extra goals.
“Last night (Friday) we could have
used a few extra goals,” he said. “It
was tough sledding last night.”
“Tonight, we played a little bit
more relaxed and they found the
back of the net a few more times,” he
said.
After the loss to Mitchell on
Friday, coach Livingston said they
found they had to play a more
relaxed style of game and have a bit
more fun and go out and just work a
little harder and that’s what paid off
for the Ironmen.
“We got some nice goals, got up
early and that makes it a lot easier.”
The Ironmen got off to a better
start on Saturday than they did on
Friday and Livingston explained
they always like to get that first goal.
“Getting that first goal means a lot
and we get momentum and it did pay
off tonight (Saturday),” the coach
said.
Stulp said the Ironmen were able
to win the game because of their
hard work.
“We were successful because of
our hard work,” he said.
He noted that hat trick was the first
of his Junior C career. He agreed
with coach Livingston in that the
Ironmen got off to a better start on
Saturday.
Mitchell opened the scoring on
Friday, when Will Marcy scored at
17:51 of the first period. Brett
Brophy tied the game at 19:54,
assisted by Armstrong.
The Hawks took a 3-1 lead in the
second period on goals by Luke
Fraser and Jalen Aitcheson.
McNeil scored at 3:20 of the third
period, assisted by Armstrong, to get
Wingham to within one of Mitchell.
Travis Knight restored the two-goal
advantage for Mitchell at 4:31.
Huber got the Ironmen back to
within one at 7:45, assisted by
McNeil. Blake Pickering netted the
equalizer at 12:50, assisted by
Huber.
Overtime solved nothing so the
game went to a shootout. Mitchell
shot first, Ryan Sykes, Brent Roe
and Aitcheson all scored for
Mitchell. Alex Kuntz was the first
shooter for Wingham and he missed,
Armstrong was the second shooter
and he scored.
Coach Livingston said the team
didn’t play all that well in the first
two periods. Down 4-2 in the third
period, he was happy the way they
were able to come back to tie the
game.
“We had some chances to win,” he
said, “You get into a shootout and

Lighting goaltenders manage five shutouts
The Saugeen Maitland Midget AA
Lightning visited the motor city of
Detroit and did not give up a single
goal in their five games in the USA
– Canada Cup Series tournament
this past weekend. Goaltenders
Rebecca Ropp and Morgan Baker
combined for the five shutouts, a feat
not equalled by any other team at the
20-team international tournament.
The Lightning won four of those five
games and battled to a 0-0 draw in
the other.
The Lightning opened the
tournament Friday morning with an
8-0 win over the Buffalo Bisons.
Tori Terpstra led the way with three
goals and two assists. Ashlee
Lawrence added two goals and two
assists while Neve Vanpelt chipped
in a goal and three assists. Cassidy
Colhoun and Avery Reeves
contributed single tallies while
additional assists were awarded to
Lexi Smith (2), Maddie Duncan,
Mel Nolan, Sarah Biesenthal and
Reeves. The Bolts second game was
a 6-0 shut-out against the Alaska
All-Stars. This time Lexi Smith
scored the hat trick with Lawrence
adding a pair of goals and an assist
and Terpstra a single along with her
two assists. Kailyn Soers, Jamie
Simpson, Jordyn Sholdice, Duncan
and VanPelt also contributed
helpers.
Saturday morning, the Lightning
played their closest, and perhaps
most exciting, game of the
tournament against the North
American Hockey Academy
(NAHA). The fast-paced, end-to-
end game ended in a 0-0 draw with
neither Lightning goaltender Ropp
or the NAHA backstop allowing a
goal in three periods plus an
overtime. The Lightning last game
of the round-robin was against the
Washington Pride. The Bolts found
their scoring touch again, wounding
the Pride 5-0.
The Bolts showed a balanced
scoring attack with each of
Lawrence, Nolan, Terpstra, Reeves
and VanPelt scoring singles. Ciara
Lark, Nikki Zabel, Duncan, Soers,
Smith, Lawrence and Nolan all
added assists. Baker turned aside all
Washington shots for her second
shutout of the tourney.
Because of the tournament format,
the Lightning 0-0 tie in the round-
robin meant the gold and bronze
medal games were out of reach and
the Bolts faced host Little Caesars
Sunday morning in a battle for
fifth place. The game remained
scoreless until half way through
the third period until VanPelt buried
the go-head marker with an
assist from Soers. Lawrence
iced the game late in the period to
make it 2-0 with an empty net
goal with assists from Colhoun
and VanPelt. Ropp was solid
between the pipes for her third
shutout.
Next weekend the Lightning travel
to Windsor and London for two
regular season away games. Follow

A good start to the season
The Wingham Ironmen have had a good start to their season despite a loss to Mitchell over
the weekend. The Junior ‘C’ team have a record of 9-2-2, tying them for wins with Walkerton
who have played one game less. The Ironmen hope to put another one in the win column with
a game against Mount Forest in Wingham on Nov. 1. (Jim Brown Photo)
