Heaven has become a trifle to you, Hell is almost a jest, eternity an empty notion, and death but a bugbear! (Charles Spurgeon) “Many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able!” Luke 13:24 I do not wonder that so many are deceived, when I see the careless way in which they deal with their souls. When men have to do with their estates, they are very careful; they pay a lawyer to go back over the title-deeds perhaps for two or three hundred years. In trade they will hurry hither and thither to attend to their commercial engagements; they would not launch into speculations, nor would they run great risks. But the soul, the poor soul--how men play with it as a toy, and despise it as if it were worthless! Two or three minutes in the morning when they first roll out of bed, two or three odd minutes in the evening, when they are nearly asleep--the fag-ends of the day given to their souls, and all the best part given to the body! And then, with what indifference do you lend your ears too often to the preaching of the Word! It is an old song; you have heard it so many times; Heaven has become a trifle to you, Hell is almost a jest, eternity and empty notion, and death but a bugbear! Alas! it is a marvel that there are not more deceived. The wonder is that any find the gate, that any discover eternal life, when we are so, so mad, so foolish, so insane--as to trifle where we ought to be solemnly in earnest; and to play and toy-- where the whole heart should be given to a work of such everlasting importance. God help us, since it is so easy to be deceived--to search, and watch, and look, and test, and try, that we be not found castaways at the last! “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it!” Matthew 7:13-14 “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you--unless, of course, you fail the test?” 2 Corinthians 13:5 A Grace Gem Submitted by: Immanuel United Reformed Church, Listowel, ON 519-291-1956 Township of North Huron Council & Committee Meeting Schedule November-December 2013 and January 2014 Regular Council Meetings 7:00 p.m. Location: North Huron Council Chambers Dates: Monday, November 4, 2013 Monday, November 18, 2013 Monday, December 2, 2013 Monday, December 16, 2013 Monday, January 6, 2014 Monday, January 20, 2014 North Huron Police Services Board Meetings Location: Police Station Board Room Dates: 7:00 p.m. November 19, 2013 7:00 p.m. December 17, 2013 7:00 p.m. January 21, 2014 Wawanosh Nature Centre November 2 9:00 - 12:00 $5 per person AM noon Learn about the conservation of native pollinator species and their habitats. Ushering were Karen Glousher, Rob and Caden Mason and Nicole Kerr. Floyd Herman was music director and Fred Hakkers ran the power point. Pastor Sandra Cable lit the Christ Candle on the altar table and welcomed everyone to church on this 153rd anniversary Sunday. She drew everyone’s attention to the announcements printed in the bulletin with special mention that the ladies were taking orders for November meat pies. She also highlighted the roast beef fall supper on Nov. 1 from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Anyone interested in collecting for the North Huron Food Bank on Oct. 31 are to call Lissa Kolkman at 519-523-9819. They are meeting at Blyth United Church at 6:30 p.m. Emily Phillips welcomed everyone visiting from Brussels United Church and others to church and reminded everyone that there was a luncheon after the service. Starting the worship service was the singing of the introit, “Lord, Prepare Me to be a Sanctuary”. Pastor Cable introduced the guest speaker Kathy Douglas, the Youth Minister for Huron Perth Presbytery. The children were asked to come to the front for their story time. Kathy gave each of the children a dish ofraisins to pass out to thecongregation. She asked everyone toreally look at it to see what it lookedlike, then to squeeze it and to smell it and then she asked everyone to bite it and taste it. She asked the children what they thought and whether they had ever taken the time to really taste a raisin. This is what we should do in life is to take the time to smell and listen to the things around us. The children and the congregation said a prayer and thechildren went downstairs to theirtime of fellowship and then helpedset the tables for lunch. The call to worship was the singing of “Come All Ye People” followed by the opening prayer said in unison and the singing of The Lord’s Prayer. The first hymn, “God is Here” was sung to the tune of “In the Bulb There is a Flower”. The prayer of illuminations was said in unison followed by the scripture from Joel 2: 23-32.Floyd Herman thanked themembers of the Brussels UnitedChurch choir for helping with thesinging. The choir favoured the congregation with the anthem, “I Believe.” Kathy’s message to the congregation was “After…” She thanked the congregation for supporting the Youth Ministry of Huron Perth Presbytery. An anniversary is a milestone to celebrate especially in these times that many churches are closing and attendance is falling. It is a time to remember the past and to look to the future, but don’t forget the here and now. It’s important to pay attention to the little things and our relationships just like paying attention to the raisin. Be grateful for the small things in life. Someone once said a wandering mind is an unhappy mind. We should focus on the happy times in our lives. We should remember the past, look forward to the future and live in the moment. When we are mindful we experience God. In the scripture Joel was a prophet sent to energize people to change things and guide them to pay attention to God. We could be more mindful and share our thoughts of the present. Things are not perfect but be mindful of what we have been given. The next hymn was “Fairest Lord Jesus” followed by the prayers for the people, the receiving of the offering, the singing of “Spirit Open My Heart” and the prayer ofdedication. The last hymn was “He LeadethMe” was followed by the blessingand the singing of “Go Now In Peace.” Pastor Cable said a blessing before everyone went downstairs to enjoy a lunch of lasagna, salad and dessert.
