Brussels Farmers’ Market vendors review season
Celebration is my word for the
week. Celebrations with meals,
special times of tulip planting to
celebrate the birth of Blake, a drink
to acknowledge the state of High
River, sharing food with the Market
vendors to wrap up the year and
joining the folks of Blyth and
Wingham United Churches in their
special celebrations, both
congregations with over 150 years of
faith in our community to celebrate. So yes, for our first few days homefrom Alberta, we did a lot ofcelebrating. We’ve returned from a
Thanksgiving trip to Alberta where
family and friendship caused us to
have a great time. Brother Clif
enjoys people so we had lots of
gathering time in Edmonton
catching up with Anne and their
children, Meg and Alec. I am now
aware of the details of preschool and
the number of steps down from a
crane where Alec is building a new
hospital in Grand Prairie. Many and
very diverse subjects were also
covered with Phil and Lauren with
us often, and that in itself is often
entertaining. Brother Jim is a new
grandpa, so we planted tulips in
Rimby to mark this new beginning
for Pat and Allison. Our time in High
River was reassuring as the Gavelsafter much hard work have theirriverside property in good shape. Ican now keep up my end of theconversation about silt and its place
in the world. A nice bonus of this
trip was seeing Jeff and Nicole
Boynton and their three sweet girls.
I brought hugs back for Grandma
Jennie in London. Once again the
stories are of positive attitudes and
living in hope – we were reminded
of Goderich after the tornado.
When market people gather for a
potluck dinner, the spread is a
beauty. After sharing a bountiful
meal, thoughts of the 2013 market
were shared including informal
surveys taken over the season. The
vendors enjoy the co-operative way
our market works. The biggest
concern is attracting regular buyers
to support the efforts of the vendors.
Volunteer co-managers Rene andJohn were thanked for their hardwork, attention and supervision. On Sunday, Brussels UnitedChurch worshipped with Blyth to
help mark 153 years as a
congregation. A combined choir of
20 plus voices along with Kathy
Douglas and her message “After…”
gave those in attendance reason to
celebrate. A great lunch added to the
sense of wellbeing as the social time
sent us on our way celebrating the
United Church of Canada.
Meanwhile the Wingham United
folks in their year-long celebration
of 150 years as a church hosted
musicians Jim and Jean Strathlee for
the weekend. Sunday evening was a
time of fun, lively, thought-
provoking music with the Strathlees
that brings theology into practice.
So this week I think I’ll just ponder
the past few weeks and just smile.Bye now, Betty G.W.

A NOTE FROM BETTY
NEWS
FROM BRUSSELSAt the Branch
Cadets’ Halloween event brings 35 youth out
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The week at the Brussels Legion
Branch began with the executive and
general meeting on Tuesday
evening. There were nine members
of the executive present for the first
meeting. The general meeting then
had another nine Comrades
attending. The normal business of
the Branch was presented and
standing committee reports were
heard. Nevada Chairman Andy
Overholt reported a positive
balance, enough for PeeWee hockey
support. Veterans Service Officer
Mabel Glanville reported that there
are six veterans and their significant
others attending the veterans
banquet in Kincardine next week.
Sports Officer Rick McDonald
reminded anyone interested in
playing zone crib to drop into the
Branch and sign up as soon as
possible. House Chairman Glenn
Bridge reported that the ladies’
washroom is just waiting for the
new mirror framing.
Sergeant-At-Arms Lisa Glanville
reported she met with Dave Walls of
Ernie King Music and he has taken
the PA system to be cleaned and will
have to run new wires for the new
outside speakers. This will be done
before Remembrance Day.
A reminder that renewal of dues at
the early bird price runs until
November 30 - so drop in soon and
also have the chance to win your
dues for 2014. Poppy canvas would
be held Saturday morning. A
donation was approved for the Santa
Claus parade. A request for items of
need or a monetary donation was
received from Community Nursing
Services and the Red Cross Care
Partners. A motion to start collecting
items requested was made and a
monetary donation will be
considered at the end of the
collection. Items to be collected
included toothbrushes, toothpaste,
hand soap, sunglasses, baseball
caps, deflated soccer balls,
medications and other medical
items. A complete list will be posted
at the Branch.
The Notice of Motion made by
Comrade Eric Ross at the previous
meeting was then presented by
Comrade Eric and President Jo-Ann.
The motion was to consider plans
presented for the Branch to add an
addition to the Branch to facilitate
accessibility. Plans were displayed
and approximate costs discussed.
Steps for going forward were
discussed. A motion then was
passed to proceed with the project of
accessibility for the Branch by the
membership.
The Friday night supper of roast
pork was enjoyed by a good crowd
of 30. This week will be ham and
scalloped potatoes.
The Cadet Corp held a Halloween
dance on Friday evening. It was
from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and there
were about 35 youths attending.
There were many great costumes
worn by the young folks. They had a
disc jockey, draw table and a
CAFÉ
More than just a great sandwich!
