laugh, followed immediately by
mental pictures of my lack of
dancing abilities.”
The Van der Meers will focus on
“country” dancing for their routine.
Armstrong hopes that the event
will generate enough funds to make
the organization’s 30th defibrillator
donation. This donation will honour
Master Corporal Kristal
Giesebrecht, who was killed in 2010
on her second tour in Afghanistan.
He says the event has grown to
become a performance spectacle,
which is something much more
grand than its humble beginnings.
“It’s been amazing,” Armstrong
says, “but all the work is done by our
volunteers, who work tirelessly so I
can take all the credit.”
He said he is in constant awe of
the volunteers, who give up so much
of their time, whether it’s board
members or the dancers, who
commit hours of time to their
routine, all for a good cause.
There will be eight couples
participating in this year’s event. In
addition to the Van der Meers, there
will be:
• Ken and Sissy Steeves: Ken is a
constable and media officer with the
London Police Service, while Sissy,
his wife, is a dispatcher for the
London Police Service. Their style
of dance will be swing.
• Mel and Erin Getty: Mel is a
retired inspector with the OPP, while
his daughter, Erin, is a dispatcher at
the Provincial Communications
Centre with the OPP. Their style of
dance will be Broadway.
• Ron Hawkins and Jennifer
Cavanagh: Ron is an advanced care
paramedic with the Middlesex-
London EMS and a Captain in the
North Middlesex Fire Department,
while Jennifer is a dispatcher at the
Provincial Communications Centre
for the OPP. The couple will be
dancing the Salsa.
• Bob Geilan and Allison Vickerd:
Bob is a firefighter with the London
Fire Department, as is Allison. Their
style of dance will be contemporary.
• Kevin McKay and Carla
MacArthur: Kevin is a Deputy
Operations Supervisor with the
Middlesex-London EMS and Carla
is a station manager with the Elgin-
St. Thomas EMS. This couple will
be tackling Disco for their
performance.
• Dusty Sutherland and Chrystal
Jones: Dusty is with the Middlesex-
London EMS, while Chrystal is a
provincial constable with the OPP.
• Josh and Colleen Waring: Both
Josh and his wife Colleen are
corporals with the 31 Service
Battalion. They will be dancing hip
hop for their performance.
This year’s judges are Scott
Tucker and Sarah Kelly from Virgin
Radio, OPP Commissioner Chris
Lewis, Scott Miller of CTV News
London and musician Bob Reid.
Tickets for the show, which will
include a silent auction, are $75 each
for dinner and the show, or $30 each
for tickets just for the show. Tickets
can be purchased on the event’s
website at www.dwts911.com
