This year there has been a notable expansion, says the Fund’s executive director and founder Patrick Armstrong, who says Dancing with the Stars of 911 should appeal to an even wider audience than before. The event, which in previous installments had been Dancing with the Stars of the OPP, has now expanded to include firefighters, paramedics and active military members. Participating organizations in this year’s event include the Brussels division of the Huron East Fire Department, the OPP, the London Police Service, the London Fire Department, the Elgin-St. Thomas EMS, the Middlesex-London EMS, the 31 Service Battalion and the Canadian Forces Medical Corps. Locally, Brussels firefighter Jason Van der Meer will be participating with his wife, Patty Van der Meer, who is an auxiliary constable with the OPP. Van der Meer, on the event’s website, www.dwts911.com, said, “When first asked about my thoughts on dancing in this competition, my gut reaction was to Central Huron Council wants to give Nobel Prize-winning author Alice Munro the keys to the municipality, and more. In taking time out to pay tribute to the well-loved and acclaimed Clinton-based author at Central Huron Council’s Oct. 15 meeting, Mayor Jim Ginn reported receiving a number of requests for media interviews when the news first hit the airwaves last Thursday. “I would certainly like to express, on behalf of our municipality, our congratulations to Alice. It’s certainly amazing when someone from Canada wins a Nobel Prize,” said Ginn, noting it is difficult to find words to express how amazing it is to have a Nobel Prize winner in Huron County. Councillor Alex Westerhout was the first to suggest giving Munro a key to the municipality, or something of that ilk, as a special way for Central Huron to pay tribute to her. Municipal staff has been directed to brainstorm on ways to pay tribute to Munro. “It’s quite an achievement and it’s bringing a lot of recognition to all of Huron County,” agreed Ginn. “It’s very noteworthy.” PAGE 34.
