I will often open up my office window in the morning to get a taste of the fresh autumn Auburn morning. Sometimes I am rewarded with the alluring smell of wood smoke coming from a nearby home trying take the chill out of the cool October morning or I willlook out and see children runningwith their dog across the fieldwearing their smiles and overcoats. Ihear the farmer across the way on his tractor feeding the calves he cares for everyday. It is all part of the fall morning in Auburn. Once in awhile, however, I hear a sound that is not native to this place. It is the high-pitch shrill of a peacock. You come to expect the sound of geese flying overhead this time of year or to hear the odd seagull who has wandered away from the lake, but not a peacock. The exotic bird belongs to Carolyn Miller who, over her past five years in Auburn, has kept a number of different birds in a large outdoor enclosure she built herself. Idropped in at Carolyn’s one day lastweek to find out more about thepeacock in Auburn.I began by asking Carolyn why she chose to make Auburn her home. She told me that her roots are here. Years ago her grandparents, the Frankens had a farm just on the outskirts of Auburn. She said her grandfather died prematurely leaving her Grandmother Emma to raise nine children on her own. Carolyn herself was raised on another farm further down Donnybrook where her Dad raised pigs. She was quick to tell me, “I like living in Auburn. I like the country feel here,” she says. “I enjoy living in a place where I know myneighbours. Every day I lookforward to the time when I can chatwith the other mothers at the schoolbus stop here in town. It is also a safe place for kids to play and live.” After getting to know Carolyn a little better I turned to the matter of the peacock. Carolyn said she has always had animals whether it be pigs, goats or birds. Looking into the cage I noticed she had a duck as well. “They are great friends,” she reported. She used to have some banting hens but they went missing and a pheasant who recently had died. She would like to get some more birds soon so we will have to keep in touch and see what Carolyn adds to her collection. NEWS FROM AUBURN By Mark Royall Call 519-441-2223 PEOPLE AROUND AUBURN Trial for former Auburn resident has begun The trial of former Auburn counsellor Gabriele DelBianco, 57, began in Sarnia superior court on Wednesday, Oct. 16. Over the first three days of the trial, as reported by Neil Bowen of the Sarnia Observer, the court heard from several women, now in their 40s, who have testified to having sexual relationships with DelBianco. DelBianco is facing 16 sexual offenses, all from the 1980s in southwestern Ontario while serving as a priest. The charges stem from allegations from four different women. Over the first three days of proceedings, several of the alleged victims testified to DelBianco making sexual advances to them when they were as young as 14. In several cases, relationships between DelBianco and the alleged victims lasted until the women were well into their 20s, the women testified. At least one of the three women told the court that DelBianco had told them he was an undercover CIA spy. In at least one case, according to the testimony of one of the alleged victims, DelBianco fathered a child with one of the women, agreeing to legal agreement that gave her a one- time child support payment of $10,000. DelBianco left the priesthood in 1996 after serving at churches in Wallaceburg and Windsor. The trial is continuing this week with more testimony to come, possibly from DelBianco himself, Bowen has reported.
