win with a second place finish with a
statue of a horse on its hind legs.
This year, however, he didn’t par-
ticipate and, with the deadline loom-
ing for next year’s competition, he’s
not sure whether he will participate
in it or not.
“It takes a lot of time to make
something that big,” he explained.
“The turnaround may be six weeks
of work or less, but that isn’t all done
at the same time, it has to be done
alongside all the other projects.”
In a previous interview with The
Citizen, he explained the bird, which
was crafted from rebar, steel and
stainless steel, and stood three-feet
tall off its stone base, took him more
than 100 hours to craft. It’s easy to
believe, looking at the intricate detail
on each feather in the animal’s six-
foot wing span.
The life-like horse is taller, but
both had to fit within the guidelines
of the competition which call for the
sculptures to be at least three feet tall
and weigh less than 1,000 pounds.
Prior to his big win, he took home
the people’s choice award with a 12-
foot tall maple tree. He explained it
didn’t sell at the time however you
can see the work definitely made an
impact as people around the commu-
nity are buying smaller models.
Aside from some of his more pop-
ular projects, he said the work he
does is widely varied.
“Everyone is unique and they havetheir own ideas and own interests, soit’s hard to say one project is popularor well-known,” he said. Discounting his big work,Breckenridge said lots of people areinterested in smaller items for theirhome and gardens like angels.“Angels are always popular bothfor the seasonal aspects and for otherpurposes,” he said, indicating he hadbuilt specialty models for memori-
als.
The angels, which are approxi-
mately three feet tall, typically come
with outstretched hands and are
capable of holding candles or other
items.
While he always has new ideascoming and prototypes planned,Breckenridge explained he doesn’talways have time to get the newpieces out and often times ends uprepeating past work, not because it’seasy, but because it’s what peoplehave seen and what they want.“A lot of my business is word-of-mouth or people seeing the prod-ucts,” he said. “They see somethinglike the angel and they say they want
it, which is fine. If I’m not very busy,
I can always make a few angels.”
However, the new ideas always do
come, including some forecasted
projects he is keeping under wraps at
the moment. He was able to say,
however, he is working on a proto-type model for a duck. The average turn-around on anyproject is hard to pin down, accord-ing to Breckenridge, however healways gets things done.“The turn-around depends onneed, if it’s for a special occasion,I’ll try to make the deadline, butmost people, when they buy fromme, they want it because I make it,not for a specific day,” he said.
“Something like the angels, I can get
done in an hour, or an hour and a
half, but with other things it depends
on a lot of factors.”
