Welder provides unique decor
Mark Breckenridge is a full-time
industrial and commercial metal
worker but it’s what he does in his
spare time at his Bluevale shop that
could really spruce up a home.
Mark, who runs Hac ‘n Wac Metal
Works with his wife Angel in
Bluevale, creates the life-like, the
surreal and everything in between
out of steel and stone and has been
doing so for nearly 15 years.
Seven of those years he has
worked through his Hac ‘n Wac
brand, but, prior to that, it was just
something he did on his own.
Crafted for home, office or
garden, Breckenridge works on
whatever piques his interest. Some
of it goes quickly, while other pieces
can take a year or more, but it all
eventually walks out the door as his
art finds its way into people’s homes
or businesses.
From more than two-storey tall
palm trees to desktop-sized items,
Breckenridge works with metal and
stone to create free-standing
sculptures, wall-hangings, clocks
and decals.
While the entire business is done
on the side, funded by his work for
mostly local auto companies,
Breckenridge said, during a recent
interview with The Citizen, he
enjoys doing it and, at any given
time, has a full workload scheduled.
“I pay my bills working for auto
companies, and the art is kind of a
side thing,” he said, adding the art
keeps him busy. “I’m always
looking at about six to eight weeks
of work ahead of me.”
Breckenridge’s work runs the
gamut from items that are custom-
made, to items he makes for
himself. He said that, while he
enjoys all the work he does, he
really loves making bigger items
like the statues that have won him
awards at the Kingsbrae Garden
Sculpture Contest in Saint Andrews,
New Brunswick.
Three years ago, Breckenridge’s
sculpture of a life-like eagle at roost
won him first place at the
competition as well as a permanent
place in the Kingsbrae Garden.
“The top statues are kept for the
garden so people can walk around
and see them,” he said.
The next year, he followed up the
