Ironmen start winning streak with pair of wins
Wingham Ironmen picked up a
pair of road victories in Western
Junior C Hockey League play on the
weekend.
Playing in Walkerton on Friday
evening, Aaron Armstrong scored
with 32 seconds remaining in
overtime to give the Ironmen a 6-5
decision over the Hawks. Armstrong
had a goal and three assists on
Saturday, in Kincardine, as the
Ironmen posted a 4-2 victory over
the Bulldogs.
The Ironmen trailed the Hawks 2-
1 after the first period on Friday and
were behind 4-2 after 40 minutes of
play. Wingham outscored Walkerton
3-1 in the third period to send the
game into overtime. Armstrong
netted the winning marker at 4:28 of
the five-minute overtime period to
give the Ironmen the win. Assisting
on the goal were Brett Brophy and
Al Kuntz.
Jordan Turcotte gave the Hawks a
2-0 lead in the first period, before
Armstrong tallied for the Ironmen,
assisted by Brophy.
Lauchlin Elder and Calvin Penney
made the score 4-1 in the second
period before Jamie Huber scored,
with help from Armstrong and
Brophy.
Brophy got the Ironmen to within
one, with the assist going to Huber.
Armstrong tied the game at 9:18 of
the third period, with Kuntz picking
up the assist. Jared Weishar gave the
Ironmen the lead at 18:51, with
Kuntz assisting. Elder tied the game
at five for the Hawks at 19:23.
Both teams had 35 shots on net
and the Ironmen were 3-14 on the
power play. Jaden Shrier earned the
victory in the Wingham net.
In Saturday’s contest in
Kincardine, the teams were even at
one after the opening 20 minutes of
play, with the Ironmen holding a 3-2
advantage going into the third
period.
Tanner Simpson gave the Bulldogs
a 1-0 lead at 4:41 of the opening
period. Armstrong tied the game at
8:33 with Brophy and Huber earning
assists.
Ryan McNeil gave the Ironmen a
2-1 advantage at 9:18 of the second
period, with Armstrong and Brophy
assisting. Huber made it 3-1 at
15:49, with Armstrong and Brophy
assisting. Cody Britton scored for
Kincardine at 19:26 of the second
period. Justin Jacklin netted the
insurance marker at 19:25 of the
third period, with Armstrong getting
the assist.
The Ironmen outshot the Bulldogs
35-31 and were 0-5 on the power
play. Shrier earned the victory in the
Wingham net.
The Ironmen play a pair of games
at the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex this weekend.
On Friday they host the Mitchell
Hawks, beginning at 7:30 p.m. and
then on Saturday, they play host to
the Bulldogs, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Madill runners qualify for WOSSAA event

Each runner on F.E. Madill Secondary School’s cross country team qualified for the Western
Ontario Secondary School Athletics Association competition to be held later this year during

The rain held off for the entire day
on Oct. 17 as athletes from Huron
Perth converged on Wildwood
Conservation Area near St. Marys to
compete in the annual cross country
championships.
Twenty-two F.E. Madill
Secondary School runners competed
and, for the first time in recent
history, every one of them qualified
for the Western Ontario Secondary
School Athletics Association
(WOSSAA) competition in London
on Oct. 24.
Over half the Madill runners
clocked their best times of the
season.
Five team members placed in the
top 12 in their races: Franklin
Marshall, Wes Klages, Marion
Studhalter, Nicole Jacobs, and Scott
Dolmage.
It was a day of ‘thirds’ and an all-
out team effort with the Senior Girls,
Midget Boys, and Overall Boys
claiming third place finishes. The
team prepares next for the
WOSSAA Championships to be
held at Springbank Park in London
Thurs. Oct. 24.
