By Jo-Ann McDonald
The Cadets met on Tuesday
evening and held their regular
evening activities. They also
confirmed plans for the Halloween
dance this Friday evening. The
dance is open for any youth 12-19 of
the area to attend. It is from 7-10
p.m. and it is cheaper if you wear a
costume. Come out for a fun time
and maybe win a prize. The evening
will be fully supervised and adult
volunteers will be available to accept
donations of pop cans and returnable
bottles for the Cadet fundraising
activities.
The Brussels Legion Branch was
the venue for the funeral luncheon
for Jack Coleman on Wednesday
afternoon. Comrades assisting the
Branch with the luncheon included
Jo-Ann McDonald, Deb Cann,
Mabel Glanville and Mary
Bradshaw.
The first Friday night supper was
held with a fantastic turnout of
nearly 55 enjoying the roast beef
dinner. New volunteer Greta Zehr
assisted Deb Cann with the morning
preparations and Mary Bradshaw
and Jo-Ann McDonald joined Deb
for the serving. A special treat was
Yorkshire pudding provided by new
members Peter and Terry Grey for
the dinner. This week will be roast
pork.
Comrades Rick and Jo-Ann
McDonald represented the Branch at
the District C Convention held in
Hepworth-Shallow Lake Branch 586
in Hepworth on the weekend.
Comrades Eric Ross and John Lowe
also attended in their respective
capacities with the zone and district.
The weekend started with President
Jo-Ann attending the president’s
meeting on Saturday morning. It was
followed by the indoor parade, due
to weather, and then lunch. A
seminar was held in the afternoon.
The banquet was held Saturday
evening with guest speaker,
Comrade Dave Smith, vice-
president of Ontario Command. The
convention convened at 9 a.m. on
Sunday morning. The business of
the convention was dealt with and
reports from the District Chairman
were heard.
Comrade Jo-Ann was presented
with a plaque for winning first place
in category E for the Branch
scrapbook. She was very surprised
when she also received the honour of
placing first in the provincial
competition and was presented with
the provincial plaque by Vice-
President Dave Smith. The
convention adjourned in the early
afternoon and a light lunch was
served.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 11 tables at play. Bush Whittard
had the help of Shirley Hopper for
the afternoon, one of the original
helpers of the euchres. Winners
were: first, John and Iola Subject,
76; second, Tom and Eileen Sloan,
75; third, John and Catherine Brown,
74; lone hands, Joann MacDonald
and Dorothy Carter, seven; low, Ed
Stewart and Glen Sellers, 44. Euchre
is every two weeks.
The Sunday night dance had a
smaller crowd enjoy the music of the
Red Rascal Band. Helpers for the
evening included Judy Lee, Mary
Bradshaw, Jo-Ann McDonald,
Mabel Glanville and Nicole Noble.
A reminder about the town and
area Poppy canvas this Saturday
morning starting at 9 a.m. Comrades
are asked to be at the Branch by 8:45
a.m. to be assigned a Cadet helper
and area to canvas, or to drive Cadets
to the surrounding villages. The
more Comrades to help, the easier
the job is for all. Comrade John
Lowe, Poppy Chairman has been
working hard to have things ready.
