This past summer, an interview team travelled across Huron County to videotape the life stories of 21 seniors for the Huron Arts & Heritage Network’s project: Honouring the Elders. Their stories are our community’s heritage. From the north end of the county, Janis and Brock Vodden, Blyth historians; Bill Farnell, retired educator; Jack Gillespie, retired CKNX General Manager, Keith Roulston, playwright and founding member of Blyth Festival; along with Rosemary Rognvaldson, Howick Senior of the Year 2012, shared their life stories. Murray Cardiff, former Conservative MP, spoke of his family’s history as farmers since the Canada Company days. Leona Armstrong, Huron County’s first female warden, shared her father’s passion for politics and how she followed in his footsteps. Eugene McGee shared history of the former Port Albert RAF Navigational School. Ed Laithwaite of Apple Park near Goderich talked about how the apple industry in Ontario has changed over the years. Sylvia Hoy of Goderich came to Canada as a young war bride. Margie and Evert Ridder and Corry Haak told stories about emigrating from Holland in the early 1950s and making Huron home. Ina Fisher of Clinton talked about life as an air force wife travelling the world before settling in Huron County. Central Huron resident Alison Lobb, local historian, shared stories of farm life on Stone School Line. Barry Cleave of Varna shared his passion for painting poultry. Ralph Laviolette, Bayfield Archivist, shared stories about his life and his volunteer work. John McAllister, retired Hensall area farmer, shared stories from his book Life’s Been Good to John. Ada Dinney of Exeter spoke of her childhood on the family farm near Locals profiled in exhibit Doing some good The Blyth Scouts were out in full force on Saturday, first selling apples throughout the village and then later, planting trees at Gary Courtney’s home on Scott Line. Pitching in on Saturday afternoon were Scout Leader Lavern Clark, left, and Mackenzie Gulutzen.
