Huber marks five goals as Ironmen beat Kincardine
The Wingham Ironmen posted a
pair of victories on the weekend in
Western Junior C Hockey League
play.
Paced by the five-goal
performance of Jamie Huber on
Friday evening at the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex, the
Ironmen recorded an 8-3 decision
over the Kincardine Bulldogs,
Playing in Mitchell on Saturday
evening, captain Aaron Armstrong
scored four goals to lead the
Ironmen to a 6-4 decision over the
Hawks.
Armstrong also enjoyed a big
night on Friday, as he collected
seven assists, but the story on Friday
was the five-goal effort of Huber.
Wingham grabbed an early 2-0
lead on Friday behind two goals by
Huber. However, Kincardine evened
the score by the end of the first
period on goals by Tanner Simpson
and Brett Catto. Travis Donaldson
gave Wingham a 3-2 advantage at
2:31 of the second period, only to
have the Bulldogs tie the score at
7:40 on a goal by Brandon Priestap.
Huber gave the Ironmen a 4-3 edge
at 17:35 and 10 seconds later Mason
Keating tallied his first goal as an
Ironmen to give Wingham a 5-3 lead
going into the third period. Huber
scored at 3:39 of the third period to
give the Ironmen a three-goal
cushion. Blake Pickering tallied his
first goal as a member of the
Ironmen at 7:37 and one minute later
Huber netted his fifth of the contest
to round out the scoring.
The Ironmen outshot the Bulldogs
44-22 and were 2-8 on the power
play. Jaden Shrier picked up the win
the Wingham net. Ryan McNeil
picked up four assists in the game,
while single helpers were earned by
Ryan Stulp, Brody TenPas and Brett
Brophy.
Coach Louie Livingston said it
was a good game for the Ironmen.
“It was good to get two goals early,
but then we gave up the lead pretty
quick,” he said. “And, we come back
and it's a 3-3 tie. That fourth and
fifth goals helped us out.”
Between the second and third
periods the coach told the players
they have enough goals to win the
game, and they went out and scored
three more, while keeping
Kincardine scoreless.
Huber said the game was fun. He
noted that his success in the game
was due in part to his linemates,
Aaron Armstrong and Ryan McNeil.
In Mitchell on Saturday evening,
the Ironmen were trailing 2-1 after
the first period. Travis Knight and
Joe Gioia scored for the Hawks, with
McNeil scoring for Wingham, with
assists going to Huber and Brophy.
Wingham outscored Mitchell in
the second period 4-1 to take a 5-3
lead into the third period.
Armstrong tied the game at two at
8:54 with assists going to Keaton
Willis and McNeil. Armstrong gave
the Ironmen a 3-2 lead at 9:39 with
McNeil and Darren Kerr assisting.
Armstrong scored an unassisted
goal at 10:35 to give the Ironmen a
4-2 advantage. Adam Zehr put
the Hawks down by one at
11:28. Ryan Stulp made it 5-3 at
16:11 with assists going to Kerr and
McNeil.
Greg Orr got the Hawks to within
one at 15:17 of the third period only
to have Armstrong score an empty-
net marker at 19:25. Huber assisted
on the goal.
Nathan Watson played 40 minutes
to earn the win in the Wingham net.
Shrier played the third period.
Mitchell outshot Wingham 41-37
and the Ironmen were 2-4 on the
power play.
With the two wins, the Ironmen
improved to 6-2-0-1 in the standings.
The Ironmen are on the road for a
pair of games this weekend. They
travel to Walkerton on Friday for a
contest against the Hawks and then
travel to the Davidson Centre on
Saturday for a 7 p.m. game against
the Bulldogs.

CHIP aims to stop phone fatalities
If you think it’s safer to make a
phone call, or send a text using your
car’s hands-free device, think again.
Studies show that when drivers use
hands-free or hand-held technology,
their risk for a crash is the same.
“When your brain is distracted by
conversation outside the vehicle, you
notice 50 per cent less of what’s
going on around you,” said Laura
Armstrong, public health promoter
with the Huron County Health Unit.
“You need more than your eyes on
the road and hands on the wheel:
your brain needs to be focused on
the task of driving.”
Whether hands-free or hand-held,
using a cellphone when driving is
dangerous and can lead to serious or
fatal motor vehicle collisions.
What’s more is that using a hand-
held device while driving is illegal.
Distracted drivers are subject to a
$155 fine. According to the Ontario
Provincial Police, distracted driving
is one of the “big four” high-risk
driving behaviours along with
aggressive driving, impaired driving,
and road users not wearing seatbelts.
Driving is a complex task that
requires undivided attention. This
month, Huron County residents will
see billboards and hear radio
advertisements asking them to leave
the phone alone and to take the
pledge at
www.leavethephonealone.ca. The
Leave the Phone Alone campaign is
organized by the Coalition for Huron
Injury Prevention (CHIP) and
funded by the Ontario Ministry of
Transportation.
For information about the Leave
the Phone Alone campaign, call
Laura Armstrong at 519-482-3416.
