BIA to host Christmas decorating competitionThe Blyth Business ImprovementArea (BIA) is hosting a housedecorating competition for the 2013holiday season. Organizer Sharon Davis, who is the head of the lights committee created to determine the best way to decorate Blyth’s downtown core for the annual Lighting of the Lights celebration held shortly after Remembrance Day, said there are many people in the Blyth area who are full of the holiday spirit and their decorations prove it.Those people, however, often liveon side streets and don’t alwaysbring in the recognition their lights and decorations deserve she says. “We do have a lot of people who do decorate very well and a lot of people who might if they knew there was this initiative,” Davis explained, adding the committee were hoping the contestants would be encouraged by some local gift certificates. “We’re looking at getting gifts and certificates from local businesses touse as prizes.”The competition will be focusedon homes and not local businesses, Davis said, because she hopes it encourages some local families to participate in the event together. “We’re hoping to get the kids involved, have them tell their moms and dads they want to help with the decorating,” she said. The committee is hoping to make the event an annual one, but that will depend on the participation they see.The judging of the competitionwill be on Dec. 12 with theannouncement being made the following Saturday, Dec. 14. Davis said it’s important for the village to recognize the efforts of the community members who make an effort to beautify it with their own money and on their own time. “You need to shine a light on people who don’t always get that attention,” she said. “It’s not very often people take a trip down thesideroads. A lot of times people willdrive by without looking. Hopefullythis draws attention to people.” Davis also mentioned this might be a way for people to get involved with their community who feel they don’t want to participate in more organized volunteer groups like the BIA or community service clubs.
