When my youngest daughter
turned 16 she was bound to get her
driver’s licence that very day. After
school she went to the Ministry of
Transportation in Clinton, wrote the
test and passed. That was the easy
part. The hard part was the first time
I got into the passenger seat of the
car while she got behind the wheel.
She did have a little driving
experience. One of the farmers in
our church let her drive his truck out
in his fields where he thought she
could do no damage. However a
number of his soya beans did not see
harvest that year.
When she got her licence we
began driving around the parking lot
at the church for a little while. When
she, or more importantly, when I felt
more comfortable, we headed out
into the streets of Auburn. Auburn is
a great place to learn to drive
because there is never a lot of traffic.
However I do recall one exception.
It was actually the first time I was in
Auburn. Jim Campbell was driving
my wife and I around town when we
encountered a traffic jam. That’s
right, a traffic jam in Auburn. We
came across a convoy of old classic
cars touring the town. I learned later that this was one ofthe many car clubs who liked to dropby Bud Chamney’s place to see hiscollection of old cars. Everyday on
my way to the office I drive by Bud’s
shop on the corner of Goderich
Street and Hardwood Line in
Auburn. There is still a Supertest
sign on the outside of the building
reminding people how years ago this
was a working Supertest Gas Station
and repair shop. I had heard that Bud
had some really nice cars inside and
I have always wanted to see them.
Friday was the day I finally got that
chance.
I met Bud at his house and we
walked over together to his shop. I
had no idea what was waiting behind
the door. There I found myself in
awe as I looked at a dozen or so old
classic Ford cars and trucks. Most of
them were from the very early 1930s
and were restored to pristine
condition. Bud said that when he
sold his disposal business his boys
told him he needed to find a hobby...
and he certainly did. Besides the
restored vehicles Bud has 27
restored antique gas pumps,
numerous gas station signs hanging
on the walls and then there is his
collection of Ontario licence plates
dating from 1913 to 1980.
I asked Bud if he had a favourite
vehicle in his collection. He pointed
over to a red 1930 Model ‘A’ Ford
pickup truck he has had for about 55
years. It was his first vehicle and
will always have a special place in
his heart. I think my favourite would
be the 1930 Ford Roadster that Bud
won an award for at last year’sThreshers’ Reunion in Blyth.Another favourite for me was the1964 Mercury Marauder. I couldenvision a movie star driving this car
around Hollywood back in the day.
Bud was very gracious answering
all my questions and I really enjoyed
my time with him. I plan to go back
again to look around some more
because there is so much there to
see. A few of his cars are available
for sale if you were wanting to begin
your own collection.
The Village Pumpkin Party is
going to be held on Saturday, Oct. 26
at the Auburn Community Centre.
There will be pumpkin carving and
children’s activities from 2-4 p.m.
You can come and carve yourpumpkin using many of the neatstencils that will be available to use.Pumpkin carving tools will also beavailable. At 5:30 p.m. there will be
a community potluck supper and
everyone is welcome. Refreshments,
plates and utensils will be provided
by the Auburn Horticultural Society.
I am told that one of the highlights
takes place after supper when they
have the “Lighting of the
Pumpkins”. It is said to be aspectacular sight to behold. You will also want to plan onattending the “Laugher and Lyrics”variety concert at Knox United
Church in Auburn 7:30 p.m. on Nov.
1. Musical guests include the
Schneider Male Chorus Quartet.
The guest emcee for the evening will
be Snippitty the Clown. Knox
United Church is also holding its
anniversary service on Oct. 20.
