Sports Ironmen split games, beat Patriots, lose to Hawks By Jim Brown Special to The Citizen The Wingham Ironmen split a pair of Western Junior C Hockey League contests on the weekend. After scoring a 4-0 decision over the Mount Forest Patriots at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex on Friday evening, the Ironmen travelled to Walkerton on Saturday evening and were handed a 4-3 setback by the Hawks. In Friday's contest against the Patriots, the Ironmen held a 1-0 lead after the first period and took a 3-0 advantage into the final period. Aaron Armstrong scored two goals to pace the Wingham victory. Brody TenPas of Brussels scored his first goal since joining the team and Ryan McNeil also scored. Armstrong opened the scoring in the first period, with Connor Johnston and Brett Brophy getting the assists. TenPas scored in the second period to give the Ironmen a 2-0 lead, Trent Bell assisted. Armstrong made it 3-0 in the second period with McNeil and Jamie Huber getting the assists. McNeil concluded the scoring in the third period, with Darren Kerr getting the assist. Jaden Shrier recorded the shutout, making 29 saves. Mount Forest outshot the Ironmen 29-26 with Wingham going 0-7 on the power play. Although it was a big win for the Ironmen, assistant coach Bill Brown said the team came out a little soft in the first period. "Shrier made a couple of big saves in the first period there, but we came a little bit flat," he said."We had a chat after the first period and I thought we got better as the game went on." The assistant coach said the team is struggling a bit on the power play and thinks the team is not shooting enough. "We have to get some point shots, we got to get the puck to the net. We're trying to make that fancy play and we have to start getting the puck to the net which we're not doing," he said. According to Brown, Shrier played pretty well in recording the shutout. "We got a couple of bounces, they hit a crossbar or two in the first period," he said "But, he's pretty sound and fundamently he's a good strong goalie and I was happy for him to get that shutout. He didn't have too many shutouts in Goderich." Lightning top out in quarter -finals The Saugeen Maitland Midget AA Lightning travelled to Toronto last weekend to participate in the Toronto Aeros Midget Classic tournament. The Bolts' first game was against last season's provincial champions North Bay Ice Boltz. The fast -paced, end-to-end affair was perhaps the Lightning's best game of the weekend, ending in a 1- 1 draw. Cassidy Colhoun chipped one in between the Ice Boltz goaltender's wickets on a great individual effort. Rebecca Ropp stopped all but one of North Bay's shots for a great effort in the Lightning net. The Lightning's second game was against one of two Midget AA teams from North York. The game was a mostly one-sided affair as indicated by the 7-0 final score. Neve VanPelt scored a hat - trick with singles going to Tori Terpstra, Avery Reeves, Lexi Smith and call-up player Sam Pruden. Assists were awarded to Jamie Simpson (2), Mel Nolan (2), Nikki Zabel, Smith and Pruden. Morgan Baker turned aside all North York Storm shots to earn the shut- out. After nearly 24 hours off, the Lightning played their third game against the Barrie Sharks. The Bolts carried the play for the majority of the game but could not get one by the Shark's goaltender. Ashlee Lawrence finally broke the scoreless tie with a goal in the final three minutes of the game to give the bolts a 1-0 win. Maddie Duncan and Zabel assisted on the play Ropp earned the shutout in net. The Lightning again found their scoring touch in their fourth game against the other North York team. Lawrence and Nolan led the way with two goals each with singles going to Colhoun, VanPelt and Terpstra. Jordyn Sholdice, Kailyn Soers, Sarah Biesenthal, Smith, Lawrence, Terpstra and Colhoun all earned assists in the game. Final score 7-3. With seven points in the round- robin portion of the tournament, the Lightning earned first place in their pool, but this meant they had to face top-ranked Stoney Creek in the quarter -finals on Sunday morning. The bolts fell behind early and could never really get their legs moving and fell 2-0 to the eventual tournament champion Sabres. The Lightning open their regular season next Saturday against Bluewater at 6 p.m. in Wingham. Follow the Lightning at www.saugeenmaitlandlightning.com According to TenPas, getting his first goal felt pretty good. "I don't really know how to say it felt, it felt awesome," he said. "It's good to get the first one done and over with." Despite outshooting the Hawks 32-25 on Saturday, the Ironmen succumbed to the Walkerton team 4- 3. Walkerton took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Spencer Elder and Brett Coulson. Armstrong got the Ironmen on the board in the second period on a goal assisted by Shrier. Lauchlin Elder made it 3-1 for the Hawks and Jamie Huber got the Ironmen back to within one as Armstrong and Kerr assisted. Brandon Lemothe restored the Hawks two -goal advantage only to have Huber net his second goal of the game for the Ironmen, with help from Kerr. The Ironmen were 2-11 on the powerplay. The Ironmen play two games this weekend. They host the Kincardine Bulldogs at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex on Friday beginning at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Ironmen travel to Mitchell for a 7:15 p.m. contest against the Hawks.
