THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2013.Dancing with the Stars this Friday in Goderich Reading strong As part of the Alice Munro Writers and Readers Festival, which was held last weekend throughout North Huron, the work of the Wingham native was on full display. As part of the festival, On Reading Alice Munro was held at the lower hall of Blyth’s Memorial Hall. After months of preparation, the fifth annual Dancing with the Stars gala will take place on Oct. 5 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Goderich. Five local dance couples are busily fine-tuning their routines in anticipation of the moment when emcees for the evening Steve Sabourin and Julie B from 101.7 The One will welcome them to the floor. The much-anticipated fundraiser for Victim Services Huron County promises to be the biggest and best yet. Practices began last spring for all five couples and since that time each professional has put together two completely different routines to perform with their “celebrity” partners in front of the enthusiastic crowd. Goderich Bank of Montreal Manager Matt Hoy hopes to win them over with his professional partner Katrina Bos, owner of East Street Station in Goderich. Goderich Volunteer Firefighter Jamie Chisholm is performing with professional Reanna Ramaker, also of Goderich. Artist and freelancerBethany Davidson can’t wait to spinaround the floor with professional Wayne Bos of Goderich. Blyth Emergency Services Training Centre’s program co-ordinator and North Huron volunteer firefighter Stephanie Currie is kicking up her heels with professional Les Cook, owner of Blyth East Side Dance and Personal Support Worker Cidalia Cabral’s dancing shoes are paired with those of professional Ken Scott of the North Huron area. Guests are in for quite a show as they watch performances set to all genres of music ranging from classic instrumental to Metallica.Beginning at 5 p.m., ticket holders will enjoy a cocktail hour, a delicious dinner featuring Shanahans Quality Meats and catered by Wamby’s Catering, the dance competition itself and a dance open to everyone once the winners have been announced. A live and silent auction featuring many fantastic items is also part of this year’s event. Just a few offerings generating excitement among ticket holders include an autographed Toronto Maple Leafs jersey, an HD camcorder donated by Microage Basics, a 30-minute plane ride fortwo in a Beech Sundowner donatedby Don Martin of Brussels and a $250 gift basket from OLG. There is even a competition between two local fire departments on the auction block this year. The Huron East (Brussels) Fire Department was first to step up to the plate, offering dinner for eight adults featuring caesar salad, bruschetta, New York striploin steak with loaded baked potatoes and specialty cheesecakes for dessert. Red and white wine will accompany the meal which will be prepared and served by several uniformed Brussels firefighters at a mutually agreed upon location in the town of Brussels, on a mutually agreed upon date. Not to be outdone, the Goderich Fire Department responded with an auction item of their own: Dinner for eight at J’s Bistro in Goderich, to be completely prepared, cooked and served by uniformed Goderich firefighters. This will take place on a date mutually agreed upon by the winner of the auction and the Goderich Fire Department. Their menu will include caesar salad and table bread, scallop and shrimp skewers, top sirloin steak, baked potatoes andasparagus and warm chocolatebrownie topped with “Grandma’s boiled chocolate icing and vanilla ice cream.” It also includes four bottles of wine. Don’t forget the many other items up for auction including gift certificates good at local stores and restaurants as well as for services including photography sessions, fitness memberships, music lessons, a children’s birthday party at the Goderich Huron YMCA, epicure and regal, just to name a few. With the addition of cameras, gift baskets, afghans and quilts, tilly hats, scentsy warmers and so much more, there truly is something to interest everyone and patrons are going to want to come prepared to bid early and bid often.Please note payment for all itemsis accepted via cash or cheque only and must be made the night of the event.
