On Sept. 30 Huron-Bruce MPPLisa Thompson was namedProgressive Conservative Critic for Small Business and Red Tape, while keeping her role as critic to the Green Energy Act. Thompson has a background in small business, as she grew the Ontario Dairy Goat Co-operative out of her home, and cultivated the Teeswater-based business to a multi- million dollar province-wide success story. “I am pleased to be taking on thisexciting role within Tim Hudak’sshadow cabinet,” said Thompson. “Small business is the backbone of the Ontario economy, and Liberal policies over the last 10 years have made it near impossible for small businesses to start-up, let alone flourish. My job will be to stand up for small businesses in Huron-Bruce and across Ontario.” There are 31 breweries who are members of the Ontario Craft Brewers Association and over 200wineries in Ontario. An example ofhow red tape and regulation is strangling this one sector, Thompson says, is that if these craft breweries and wineries want to ship their product to an LCBO, they cannot do so on the winery or brewery’s own truck, they have to use a third-party shipper. This adds more costs to a small business’ bottom line, which inevitably is passed on to the consumer. “This is just one example of howgovernment regulations are holdingone sector back from expanding their market,” said Thompson. “The PCs are the only party standing up for small business, and I look forward to getting out there, meeting with small businesses and Chambers of Commerce to see where the challenges and opportunities are, and how we can make small business a driving economic force again.” Since her election in 2011,Thompson has made visiting andlearning from small businesses in Huron-Bruce a priority, and she says she looks forward to travelling across Ontario to do the same.
