North Huron Township and the
Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority welcomed students from
the University of Guelph’s
Landscape Architecture program to
give their input on the future of the
Park Street site near Howson Dam in
Wingham.
Sixteen second-year Landscape
Architecture Master program
students under the guidance of
Professor Robert Corry arrived in
Wingham last Thursday and, with
information packets in hand, began
visualizing what the future could
look like for the site.
Corry explained, at a joint
announcement on Thursday Sept. 26
in Wingham between the school, the
conservation authority and the
township, there are five institutes
that teach Landscape Architecture in
Canada and the University of
Guelph’s program is the largest and
oldest.
He said the opportunity for the
students to work on the project is a
welcome one because the program is
always looking for unique
opportunities for them to ply what
they are learning.
“The students will imagine a new
future for this space,” he said. “They
will look at the connections that
exist, the culture of the area and the
importance of the park to visitors,
tourists and the local community.”
The students will, for the next five
weeks, work in pairs to prepare their
final presentations about the area
and how it could look.Upon being questioned, Corryexplained the students wouldn’t be
constrained by a budget and the
exercise was to get them to think
about the space in a creative way.
He went on to say that, when the
project was complete, it would result
in eight different lists of ideas and
possibilities and that, while none of
those eight may be chosen as a
starting point for a project to
remodel the area, the final product
could and would hopefully contain
pieces from the various projects.
Other questions for Corry focused
on the pond and water height and
former dam that, through collapsing,
has resulted in the creation
of the flood plains at the south
entrance of Wingham on County
Road 4.
While the existing dam near the
site was spoken of as important for
the pond it created, which is
appreciated by the public and used
during the annual Musical Muskrat
Festival for the cardboard boat
regatta, Phil Beard and Steve
Jackson, the General Manager and
Water Resources Engineer for the
Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority respectfully, explained the
official stance was that, from flood
plain management, it would be
better to remove the dam.
“The dam is not a flood control
feature,” Jackson said, explaining
that, by removing it, the measure
could create more buildable areas by
lessening the flood zone down river.
Corry explained the groups would
all be creating attractive landscaping
and the visuals would be important, but said each group would focus onwhat they felt was important.
He said some students would look
at the existing culture and history of
the site while others might consider
removing the dam to create a free-flowing river, as would beecologically responsible. He said
that, however, these were only
suggestions for the council and the
conservation authority.
The group was provided a packageincluding the township’s strategicplan, recreation and leisure guide,
demographic reports and documents
on ecological properties of the area
and set loose to start the project.

A bird’s eye view
Professor Robert Corry, right, was part of a joint announcement last Thursday as the
University of Guelph’s Landscape Architecture program, the Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority and the Township of North Huron prepared to collaborate on potential redesign
options for a green space in Wingham near the Howson Dam. Corry, along with his 16 second-
year Landscape Architecture Master students, shown here examining a map of the area,
arrived on Thursday and began preparing, in pairs, to give their vision of what the site could
look like. (Denny Scott photo)
