Ironmen’s streak ends with ‘heartbreaking’ losses
The Wingham Ironmen suffered a
pair of heartbreaking setbacks in
Western Junior C Hockey League
play on the weekend.
Playing at the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex on
Friday evening, the Ironmen fell 3-2
to the Mitchell Hawks in a shootout.
On Saturday playing at home, the
Ironmen fell 4-3 to the Walkerton
Hawks.
Walkerton took a 3-1 first period
lead on Saturday with the Ironmen
tying the game at three in the second
period. Walkerton won the game
with a goal by Brooks Neithrope at
17:25 of the third period on a give
away in the defensive zone.
Aaron Armstrong scored for the
Ironmen in the first period, assisted
by Jamie Huber. Scoring for the
Hawks in the period were Calvin
Penney, Jay Thomson and Brandon
Lamothe.
Darren Kerr scored at 3:36 of the
second period to put the Ironmen
one goal back. Assisting on the goal
were Justin Jacklin and Brett
Brophy. Ryan McNeil tied the game
at 19:01 with Armstrong getting the
assist. Jaden Shrier suffered the loss
in the Wingham net.
Coach Louie Livingston said it
was a tough loss. “We didn’t have a
very good first period, a really bad
first period and that got us behind,”
he said. “The second and third
period, we played pretty good, I
think we played great. We just
couldn’t find the back of the net. We
have to get more scoring, we should
be able to score more than three
goals.”
He said a team doesn’t win
anything in September. “These two
games, hopefully they’ll build a little
bit of character for the boys,” said
Livingston. “They have to win these
close games and that’s something we
have to keep working at.”
The coach said giving up a late
goal like that was a heartbreaker.
“We worked so hard and things
happen,” he said.
Rookie Jeremy Ross said it was a
tough loss, with the score 4-3 and
Walkerton scoring with two minutes
left to play.
“You can’t really do too much
about that,” he said.
He said the Ironmen battled back
to tie the game, but it was just a
couple of bad bounces right away
and they put it in the net. He
indicated the Ironmen were taking a
lot of penalties but they were able to
kill them off.
In the game against Mitchell on
Friday evening, the Ironmen held a
1-0 lead after the first period and
were in front 2-1 after 40 minutes,
only to have Mitchell tie the game at
two in the third period. Overtime
solved nothing, so they went to a
shootout which Mitchell won 2-0 to
win the game 3-2.
Armstrong gave the Ironmen a 1-0
lead in the first period, assisted by
McNeil and Huber.Tyler Tolton tied
the game at one in the second period
with Armstrong giving the Ironmen
a 2-1 advantage, Kerr assisted on the
goal. Greg Orr netted the equalizer
in the third period.
In the shootout Armstrong and
McNeil missed on their
opportunities for the Ironmen. For
Mitchell, Joe Giola was
unsuccessful on his chance while
Ryan Sykes and Brent Rae scored on
their chances. Rookie Nathan
Watson of Brussels was handed the
setback in the Wingham goal.
Coach Livingston said it was a good
game.
“It was a hard-fought game and
they [Mitchell] really played well.
They did a lot of good things, so did
we though. I like the way we carried
the play,” he said. “Their goalie
played well, we had a lot of good
chances, we missed the net, some
good chances.”
He said the Ironmen should have
capitalized on their power plays a
little more than they did.
“We had chances and all of a

Bitter defeat
The Ironmen’s early-season undefeated winning spree couldn’t continue as, after downing
Walkerton twice and Mount Forest once, the Ironmen put up two losses, against Mitchell and
Walkerton respectively, over the weekend. Mitchell emerged victorious with a 3-2 win after a
shootout while Walkerton edged out the Ironmen 4-3. (Jim Brown photo)

Home ice didn’t help
The Wingham Ironmen couldn’t rely on the home-ice
advantage to continue their three-game undefeated streak
as they dropped home games to Mitchell 3-2 and
Walkerton 4-3 over the weekend. Nathan Watson of
Brussels was in net. (Jim Brown photo)
