The sinfulness of sin
(J.C. Ryle)
“In order that by means of the Commandment the unspeakable sinfulness of sin
might be plainly shown.” Romans 7:13
The Christianity which is from the Holy Spirit, will aways have a very deep view
of the sinfulness of sin. It will not merely regard sin as a blemish and misfortune,
which makes men and women objects of pity and compassion. It will see sin as...the
curse which cursed God’s beautiful creation, the cursed thing which makes the
whole earth groan and struggle in pain, the abominable thing which God hates, the
thing which makes people guilty and lost in his Maker’s sight, the thing which
deserves God’s eternal wrath and condemnation.
It will look on sin as the cause of all...sorrow and unhappiness, strife and wars,
quarrels and contentions, sickness and death!
Above all, it will see in sin the thing which will...ruin us eternally--unless we can
find a ransom, lead us captive--unless we can get its chains broken, and destroy our
happiness, both here and hereafter--unless we fight against it, even unto death.

Children given homework to make sign for creation
Greeting worshippers at Blyth
United Church on Sunday, Sept. 29
were Brenda Brooks and Marilyn
Craig. Ushering were Andrew
Wharton, Nancy Hakkers, Brenda
Brooks and Rob Mason. Floyd
Herman was music director and
Lavern Clark ran the power point.
Pastor Sandra Cable welcomed
everyone to church on such a
beautiful day.
The call to worship was the
singing of the hymn, “We Are
Marching” sung as the response. The
opening prayer was repeated
responsively followed by the singing
of The Lord’s Prayer. The first
hymn, “All Creatures of Our God
and King” was sung and the children
were asked to come to the front for
their story time.
Pastor Cable explained to the
children who the stewards of the
church were and that their job was to
look after the affairs of the church.
She then asked the children what
creation meant to them. The answer
came back as something created.
God created all of us and our world
around us. We should walk lightly
over the earth so that we don’t
damage the land. We should leave
tracks and no trash. We should pick
up the trash and put it in the proper
place.
She asked the children to make a
sign for next week about what
creation meant to them.
The children repeated a prayer
along with the congregation and
went downstairs for their time of
fellowship.
The next hymn was “Behold,
Behold, I Make All Things New”
followed by the prayer of confession
repeated responsively and the
assurance of pardon repeated in
unison. The hymn “We Praise You
Creator” was followed by the prayer
of illumination. The scripture was
from Genesis 13: 1-17. Floyd
Herman told a short story about the
anthem, “Try to Remember.” It was
a song taken from a Broadway show.
Pastor Cable’s message to the
congregation was “Gentle Footsteps
Upon Me.” In the scriptures this
morning Abram and Lot were rich
men and had many cattle and sheep.
Abram saw that there was not going
to be enough land to graze both their
herds and gave Lot the choice of
which way he wanted to go. Lot
chose a very luscious valley but
there were evil people in that area.
Abram stayed behind and God
promised him and his descendants
that the land would last them many
generations if attended well. We are
to walk gently on the earth and be
stewards of the land.
Our actions affect the whole
world.
Cheryl Cronin led the
congregation in a responsive
reading. The next hymn was “God of
the Sparrow” followed by the
receiving of the offering, the
offering response “What Can I Do”
and the prayer of dedication, the
reading of the blessing and the
response “Dance with the Spirit.”
Cheryl invited everyone for coffee
and fellowship with one another.

The mask
Peggy Coffey took centre stage on the weekend as part of
the Alice Munro Writers and Readers Festival, which was
held across North Huron with events on both Saturday and
Sunday. Coffey performed I Was Born at Blyth’s Phillips
Studio, bringing alive some of the stories of women who
were involved in the early days of the Women’s Institute.
Her performance involved the creative use of masks. (Vicky

There were many who came out
