October, fall a chance to look back, review on year
October is here – the month of
Thanksgiving and Halloween. What
more could you want from a month?
October and the other months of fall
always seem to be times of getting
ready, planning ahead and reviewingthe work past. Field work, gardens, yards, food for the winter all make
the work of autumn purposeful and
worthwhile. With this effort you are
saying the future is coming, so
preparations need to happen now.
Just part of being ready for the
coming seasons in our lives.
Celebrate autumn.
Market days are in limited supply,
only two left, this Friday the tastes
of Huron will be showcased along
with our regular vendors and their
local wares. For those who still miss
the butcher shop, local people are
offering pork, lamb and processed
meats – all from our area. It’s alwaysa good thing to know what you’reeating. This could also be a chance
to get started on your gift shopping
soaps, jams and pickles, jewellery,
spices and mixes would all be
welcome under many a tree in a very
few weeks. The United Church folks
want to make sure you have baking
for your special Thanksgiving
company. They are offering you a
bake sale on Oct. 11 for all your
baking convenience. So be sure to
support the market these last two
weeks and get yourselves some good
things. It wouldn’t hurt to thank the
folks who have worked hard for our
community since May.Birthday parties are always fun nomatter if you’re five or 90. Ross
Nichol hit the 90 mark on Sunday. It
was reunion time on the sixth when
Ross’s family decided that he
needed a celebration, or at least they
did. His children Marg, Hugh and
Paul, many family and friends with
old neighbours galore spent time
with the birthday boy. A tented area
on the farm where he was born made
an excellent greeting area. Old and
new stories, salutes and salutations, laughter and food made this a veryfine party for a very fine man. May
your 90s bring you peace and great
memories.
We had a birth in the family. My
youngest brother Jim is a grandpa!
Patrick and Allyson, near Red Deer,
oldest son of Jim and Beth,
welcomed Blake Richard
Hetherington into their lives last
Saturday. As you well know – all
those lives will never be the same.
What joy! From this end I can’t
believe Jim can be that old already.
Take care of yourself.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

At the Branch
RCL holding student video contest
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The general meeting of the
Brussels Legion Branch was held on
Tuesday evening. It was the annual
zone visitation by the Zone
Commander Larry Bailey and
Deputy-Zone Commander Eric
Ross. They arrived prior to the
meeting and inspect the secretary’s
books assuring proper record
keeping of meetings are in place.
They discuss and inspect insurance
policies, hiring practices, and the
general well being of the Branch
with the president. The accounting
books of the treasurer and Nevada
were also inspected. The Poppy
ledger books will be done next week
in the absence of the Poppy
Chairman.
There were 16 Comrades in
attendance at the meeting to review
the minutes of the summer executive
meetings and to approve the motions
made. The chairmen gave their
reports. Nevada Chairman Andy
Overholt reported a license
extension was approved and Nevada
tickets are available now and there is
a positive balance showing. Service
Officer Mabel Glanville reported
about her visit to Parkwood Hospital
and the variety show. It was really
great with the Bag Ladies
performing and many other acts.
The residents appreciate the goody
bags and the program will continue
next year. The Zone C 1 Veterans
dinner is in Kincardine Branch 183
on Sunday, Nov. 3 and Mabel will
be contacting veterans about
attending. The Branch membership
stands at 118 with the early bird
campaign almost at the end of the
first month.
Youth Chairman Nanci Ducharme
reported on attending the youth
seminar and learning about the new
Ontario Command Remembrance
Video Contest. There will be a
category for individuals and a group
category. The videos are to be put on
YouTube and will be judged by
Ontario Command for originality,
research, emotion and
intergenerational message quality.
The top five video scores may also
be based on the number of “likes”
they receive. More information is to
come.
The Sports Chairman Rick
McDonald reports the arrival of the
zone sports sign-up sheets for the
upcoming year. The first event will
be crib in November. Drop into the
Branch and check out the sheets.
The House Chairman Glenn
Bridge reports the bathroom
renovations are coming along
nicely. They should be completed
within about a week.
Other reports were heard from
other committee chairs and then new
business was heard. The
accessibility committee has met
about ideas and designs for an
addition to complement the Branch.
Committee Chairman Eric Ross
then made a “Notice of Motion” to
