The Citizen, 2013-09-26, Page 25THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2013. PAGE 25. Continued from page 23green energy-related matters.*** Central Huron is introducing new cemetery fees for the first time in a decade, but the proposed increases did not pass without some debate. Councillor Alison Lobb questioned whether some of the fee increases, which in some cases are more than double, are too much too soon. While Mayor Jim Ginn noted it has been a decade since the feeswere increased, clerk BrendaMacIsaac explained it took a number of years to make the changes since municipal staff were waiting for provincial officials to make their final changes to the Cemeteries Act, which was just completed last year. Though both Councillors Lobb and Brian Barnim suggested phasing in the new fees, the clerk noted it is important to begin to bring the fees up the actual costs involved since, for example, $16,000 in cemeteryfees were collected this year whileactual expenses for the municipality totalled $84,000. “What caught everybody off-guard is the care and maintenance [fees set by the province]”, she said. While Lobb noted neighbouring municipalities have fees in the $300 to $589 range, she asked whether the new charges would allow the municipality to break even. “No, but it will bring it closer,” replied the clerk. After some debate, council alsochose to continue to allow the purchase of extra deep plots, at a newly-increased price of $500, so that families can use one plot if they so choose. *** Central Huron Mayor Jim Ginn Central Huron is facing some “difficulties” with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing with regard to the boundary adjustment agreement with the Town ofGoderich.“This needs to be done by the end of the year,” said Ginn, adding the ministry wants the water lots removed from the agreement, meaning the document itself has changed, thereby necessitating another public meeting. Central Huron has set 5 p.m., Oct. 8 for the time and date of a special public meeting to discuss the boundary agreement.
