For more information please contact the Municipal Office at 519-482-3997 or email cao@centralhuron.com Locals lead team to championship Several local slo-pitch players travelled to Niagara Falls for the provincial slo-pitch tournament last weekend and came home as the provincial winners. Cindy Carter, Lorraine Blake, Lynn McNichol and Lisa Stevenson joined the rest of the Canadian Pack and Parcel (CPP)/Hayters Plumbing slo-pitch team to see how they could fair in the ‘E’ division. Lorraine Blake explained that the team got together as six of them wanted to try and see how far they could make it in the tournament. The team swept through a round- robin tournament on Friday and Saturday undefeated which won them a bye into Sunday. “Sunday was a single-elimination day so we had to keep winning,” she said. The team played five games straight, winning each one of them and then ‘mercied’ a team from Frankford, Ontario to win the final game and bring home the gold. The win entitles the team to participate in the national championship next year, however a date and location for that has not been announced. “We think it’s going to be held out west,” Blake said. “However, there’s been no confirmation.” The team had to mark several wins during the season to be considered for the year-end tournament and played games in Dorchester and Springfield, Ontario to make it to the final tournament in Niagara Falls. Blake said that two other local competitors, Heather Dunbar and Melissa Jacklin, helped the team by playing in those games. In total, there were 57 teams in the ‘E’ division as well as two mens divisions and one other women’s division at the tournament. The team received rings and jackets for their win and, through Hayters Plumbing, the team’s new sponsor, the ladies will be taking to the field next year with a new name and hopefully bringing home the national trophy. Big (local) winners The CPP/Hayters slo-pitch team was able to win big at the provincial championships, taking the ‘E’ bracket gold and earning themselves a berth at the national championships next year. Local players include, from left, Cindy Carter, Lorraine Blake, Lynn McNichol and Lisa Stevenson. Not shown are Heather Dunbar and Melissa Jacklin who helped the team qualify for the event. (Photo submitted) Grade 8 runnersperform well for Madill T&F team The F.E. Madill Secondary School cross country team competed in its first meet of the season at Fanshawe Park Conservation Area in London. It was an opportunity to get race experience and to compete with many of the Western Ontario Secondary School Athletics Association (WOSSAA) runners the athletes will encounter this season. The Midget Boys team of Franklin Marshall, Jordan Pham, Riley Potter, and Mitch Ward were seventh overall in a very large field of runners. Both Marshall and Pham won awards for placing in the top 10 with their seventh and eighth place finishes. The results were promising given that two of the runners, Jordan Pham and Riley Potter, are both Grade 8 runners. Notable mention in Junior Boys goes to Wes Klages who raced with an arm cast after breaking his arm the previous day. He put in a strong performance in his first ever high school race. In the Senior Girls division, Marion Studhalter led her team with her best ever pace for the five- kilometre run. And, in Senior Boys, Scott Dolmage and Mark Metcalfe both substantially bettered their per- kilometre time. The team competed at Springbank Park in London this week as well. ,+*)(' &'(+,% $#"!)( ''*), (+,(',), "+#,% %#&* ',* * + ( ( ( /.-, +*)-(' -, &-%'$ #$"'! ).' !*%-,-*$, * ).' #$-(- () ( '()-*$ /.' *#$(- * ).' *! *!)-*$ * ).' *#$) * #!*$ - ' .*"-$& '(*$" # -( '')-$& *$ '"$'," ()* '! $" ) -$ ).' *#!) *#,' *#$(- . Blyth Laundromat 191 Westmoreland St., Blyth 519-523-9687 And now, the Crusaders Rob Gordon unveiled the new hockey jerseys for the Blyth Brussels Minor Hockey Association on Sunday at Blyth Lions Park. After a two-year trial amalgamation between both the Blyth and Brussels Minor Hockey Associations, a vote to remain amalgamated passed with flying colours earlier this year. The natural next step was new uniforms that can be shared by all members of the new association. Local teams will now be known as the Blyth Brussels Crusaders and will wear the two jerseys seen above, leaving behind the historical names of the Brussels Bulls and the Blyth Bulldogs. At the ceremony, Gordon thanked a number of sponsors who made the new jerseys a reality.
