For the second consecutive Friday evening, the Ironmen defeated the Walkerton Hawks. Playing at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex last Friday, the Ironmen defeated the Hawks by a score of 7- 2. The Ironmen were paced by the three-goal performance of Ryan McNeil. McNeil also earned an assist. Aaron Armstrong chipped in with two goals and three assists. McNeil opened the scoring at 1:46 of the first period after being set up by Armstrong. McNeil gave the Ironmen a two-goal advantage at 19:26 of the opening period, with Jamie Huber and Brett Brophy earning the assists. Huber gave Wingham a 3-0 lead at 2:52 of the second period, with Armstrong getting the assist. McNeil collected his third goal at 5:34 with the assist going to Armstrong. Justin Jacklin scored an unassisted marker at 6:02 to give the Ironmen a 5-0 lead. Armstrong scored at 6:26 to give Wingham a 6-0 advantage. Jared Weishar and Keaton Willis received the assists. Walkerton got on the scoreboard at 10:07 as Brandon Lamothe scored. Armstrong restored the Ironmen’s six-goal advantage at 15:58 of the second period, with assists going to McNeil and Mason Keating. Chris Gillman scored at 16:21 of the third period for the Hawks to round out the scoring. Wingham outshot Walkerton 40-31 and the Ironmen were 3-9 on the power play. Coach Louie Livingston said it was a good game for the Ironmen although it was close for awhile because it was the home opener and the players were a little bit nervous in the first period. “We got up a little bit, we had some chances and we didn't put them away, but I think after the start of the second period we came out and we got some goals when we should’ve and everybody worked hard,” he said. “We kind of let down a little bit in the third and they got a lot of chances, but our goalie (Jaden Shrier) played well in the third period.” According to the coach, the Ironmen are trying to get more balanced scoring. “We have to have secondary scoring, and I think that’s what we're showing we have”, said Livingston. “We have a few guys now that can put the puck in the net besides Army (Aaron Armstrong), so that’s what it’s all about.” “We got good goaltending tonight, again,” he said. The coach said they have practised 5-3 power plays, but it is something they will have to practice some more. “That’s when you can put teams away when you have the chance, you have to score on those opportunities,” he said. “We’ll get better at it, don’t worry.” Captain Aaron Armstrong said it was a good game for the Ironmen. “It was nice to come out strong. Walkerton lost some of their best players early and we took advantage of that,” he said. “We had some nice plays by our young players.” He said it was a privilege to play with first year player Jamie Huber. He added that another 16-year-old, Keaton Willis, had a really big game. “He looks like he’s been playing in the league three or four years with how tough he plays out there,” said Armstrong. The captain said it was nice to have a balanced attack this year. “We have some great forwards, it’s really nice to play with Jared Weishar and Brody TenPas and everyone up front is just fantastic, can’t say enough about Jeremy Ross and Justin Jacklin and obviously Ryan McNeil who won our Ironmen Hardest Working Player of the Game tonight with his three goals,” he said. The Ironmen are at home for a pair of games this weekend. On Friday, they host the Mitchell Hawks in a game beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex and then host the Walkerton Hawks on Saturday, beginning at 7:30 p.m. By Jim Brown Special to The Citizen On a roll With a 7-2 victory over the Walkerton Hawks, the Ironmen were able to continue their undefeated season, stretching their win streak to three. (Jim Brown photo) Johnston named top pitcher at tournament The Palmerston Marlins, featuring Brussels’ Jessica Johnston, first won gold at the provincial level and now have won silver in the Eastern Canadian Championships in Stellarton, Nova Scotia. Johnston was named the top pitcher in the Nova Scotia tournament. On Aug. 20, the Palmerston Marlins Novice Girls boarded a bus and began the long journey to Stellarton to compete in the Eastern Canadian Fastball Championships hosted by the Stellarton Subway Stingers. The games began on Thursday, the first against Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, which resulted in a 10-3 win for the Marlins; a great way to begin the tournament. This game was followed by the opening ceremonies including bagpipers and an RCMP escort onto the field, a truly exciting event. The team then went to a banquet hosted by Subway to meet and greet the members of the other teams. On Friday the Marlins beat Sackville, Nova Scotia by a score of 12-5, however, the next game was a very close loss 9-8 to Etoiles Madawaska, New Brunswick. Saturday the team’s bats came alive again for wins over the New Brunswick Memramcook Dynamites, 13-5, and the Stellarton, Nova Scotia Stingers 11-3. With four wins, one loss and the number of runs scored, this advanced the Marlins into the gold medal round on Sunday. Saturday night the team, coaches and families had some time to experience the harbour life and food fare that the east coast has to offer. Sunday afternoon came and the Marlins were to face their rivals from Ontario: the North Oxford Crush. During regular season play the Marlins came up short each time against the Crush but eagerly defeated them both games in provincials. The game began with both teams battling back and forth with a tie score for five innings, both teams batting and fielding very competitively. The end result was a close loss to the Crush, earning the Palmerston Marlins a still victorious silver medal for ladies fastball in eastern Canada. The 2013 Novice Marlins team is the first novice team from the Palmerston Marlins to advance to the Eastern Canadians and bring home a medal. Congratulations Marlins! The coaches Dave McEachern, Ken Iles, Bruce Johnston, Brad Culp, Bench Mom Danielle Schill, and Scorekeeper/Manager Mary Iles are very proud of all the girls’ accomplishments this season.Leading the way The Palmerston Marlins, including Brussels’ Jessica Johnston, took gold at the Eastern Canadian Championships. Johnston was named top pitcher at the event.
