Covey Greeting worshippers at Blyth United Church on Sunday, Sept. 22 were Brenda Brooks and Marilyn Craig. Ushering were Andrew Wharton, Nancy Hakkers, Brenda Brooks and Rob Mason. Floyd Herman was music director. Mark Bibok ran the power point. The guest minister was Rev. Randy Covey from Clinton United Church. He was exchanging pulpits with Pastor Sandra Cable. Rev. Covey welcomed everyone to church and drew attention to the announcements that had been scrolling on the power point, with special attention that Blyth United Church is hosting a food handling information night on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. The speaker will be the health inspector. This presentation is only one hour. Please take advantage and come out. Everyone is welcome. The first song was “It Only Takes a Spark”. The call to worship was repeated responsively followed by the prayer of approach and the Lord’s Prayer in unison. The first hymn was “Come, Children Join to Sing.” The children were asked to come to the front for their story time. Rev. Covey told the children he had brought a friend along and his name was Freddie the Flea. He showed the children that Freddie could do a couple of tricks. When Freddie was finished everyone clapped, including Rev. Covey. Well you can guess what happened to the flea. He was squashed in his hands. Rev. Covey said he could maybe train another flea but it would take a lot of practice. God wants us to be like the flea and practice to love one another. The children and the congregation sang the song, “Jesus Loves the Little Children.” The prayer of confession was repeated in unison and the words of assurance were repeated responsively. Floyd Herman gave a short history of the anthem, “Blessed Assurance” sung by the choir. The anthem was written by Fanny Crosby who was over 90 when she died. She wrote thousands of songs even though she was blind. The next hymn was “Listen to Your Children Praying” followed by the prayers for the people. Rev. Covey’s message to the congregation was “On Being a Scoundrel.” He told the story of a young man taking a short cut homewalking through a cemetery and fellinto an open grave. He tried to getout but was unable to get out sodecided to crawl into a dark corner for the night. A second young man did the same thing and fell into the open grave. When the first young man spoke and told him there wasno way out the second young manclimbed out. The second young manwas motivated by the voice of thefirst man and climbed out. The power of motivation can make us do impossible things. In the scriptures Luke is a unique story teller. Luke tells the story of amanager being let go because ofdishonest things. The story ends bythe manager being rehired becausehe did some good things. Luke tells us that Jesus motivates us to listen to His stories about God. If we are faithful in small things the bigger things will come. We should make use of all of our skills. We should be respectful and care for one another. Rev. Covey left during the singing of the next hymn, “Spirit of Gentleness” to his service in Brussels. Lori Brooks took over the rest of the service. The offering was received followed by the offering response, “We Give You But Your Own” and the prayer of dedication and the blessing. Everyone was invited for coffee, treats and fellowship after the service. beginning Wednesday, October 2, 2013 Blyth Christian Reformed Church 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Opening Program: Speaker Michelle Holden “The joys and trials of raising a child with Down Syndrome ... The Christian’s dress all the week (J.R. Miller, “Help for the Day”) Religion and common life are not two different and distinct things. We may not cut our existence in two parts, and say, “Over this Christ shall rule--but over that He shall have no control.” True religion knows no difference between Sunday and Monday, so far as the ethics of life are concerned. Each day brings its own specific duties; but there are not moral precepts for the one day which are suspended when its sun sets, that for six days a mitigated or less holy law may prevail. Holiness is to be the Christian’s dress all the week through, in every hour’s conduct. All pleasures and amusements must be tested by the unvarying rule of right. The standard of perfect purity cannot be lowered. “You ought to live holy and godly lives” 2 Peter 3:11 A Grace Gem Submitted by: Immanuel United Reformed Church, Listowel, ON 519-291-1956 CORPORATION OF THE TOWNSHIP OF NORTH HURON TAXES DUE The next 2013 tax installment for the Township of North Huron is due on Thursday, September 26, 2013.
