Special to The Citizen
Nathan LaFlamme has a lot to
be proud of as he came home
with his second provincial BMX
championship in a row this year.
LaFlamme, who is six years old
and hails from Blyth, started
competing in cycle racing last year
and brought home the number one
plate (the highest award from the
competition) both this year and last
year.
The competition this year was
held in Milton and LaFlamme said
that he was excited to participate.
He’s also very happy to show off his
pride and joy to anyone who asks:
his bike.
Having started cycling at the age
of two, LaFlamme said that getting
involved in racing was something he
just wanted to try.
“I just felt like racing and trying
to win,” he said. “I just like doing
sports. It feels good thinking about
the win this year.”
LaFlamme usually practises in
Saugeen Shores and tries to ride two
or three times a week. With his
family, he has been all over Ontario
visiting tracks to race and get a feel
for the sports.
Events have taken him all over
alongside his parents, Sharla Haney
and Scott LaFlamme, who invested
in a camper to be able to travel
with their son to the various
events. The family has even
travelled to the United States for a
race in Michigan. Haney said,
however, that they try to stay closer
to home.
While LaFlamme said he does
enjoy racing and really enjoys
winning, he also said he had made
some good friends throughout all
the different races he has attended.
Each race consists of heats,
qualifiers and a final race and, at his
age bracket, LaFlamme is usually
taking on two or three other racers
in the same race, however there
could be as many as eight racers per
heat.

Chepstow Lightning win gold
It was an exciting summer of
fastball action for Logan Kellington,
Ben Newell and Jack Pipe who had
the opportunity to play for the
Chepstow Lang Farms Lightning in
the Ontario Amateur Softball
Association League (OASA). After
qualifying as the number one seed
from Ontario to head east at the
elimination tournament in Cobourg
in July, the team continued its
success by winning the Ontario
PeeWee A Championship on Aug.
18 in Ponsonby.
After a few days off, the boys and
their families travelled to
Fredericton, New Brunswick for the
Eastern Canadian Championship
Tournament. Chepstow advanced
through the round robin bracket with
wins over Newfoundland, Nova
Scotia and host Fredericton.
In the first game of the playoff
round they faced off against
provincial rivals, the Napanee
Express. The boys gave up three
early runs but stormed back to get a
decisive 10-3 victory and move on
the gold medal game. Nova Scotia
worked their way back through the
lower bracket of the playoffs to get
to the championship game against
Ontario. The hits came early and
often for Chepstow who walked
away with a 7-0 win and Eastern
Canadian Gold.
On Wednesday, Sept. 11 the
Wingham Golf And Curling Club
hosted the 10th annual John Malick
senior golf tournament.Wingham
member Don Bone became a three-
time winner of this event, posting a
super round of 75 to edge out former
winner Wayne Pearen from the
Westmount Golf Club in Kitchener.
Local golfers Steve Nixon and
Brian Carr captured top spots in
their age divisions both firing solid
rounds of 80. Donna Anderson
(John’s daughter) was on hand to
present the championship trophy.
The Anderson family donated a
bench in memory of John to help
celebrate the 10th anniversary of
this event.
Malick was a great volunteer and
member of the club and will be
remembered for many years to come.
In regular league action Ann Ross
took home the prize for longest putt
following the Tuesday ladies golf
and luncheon. The senior men also
hit the links on Tuesday with Bill
Brown claiming top spot with Bob
Foxton second and Lloyd Lamont
third. Grant Currie was winner of
the closest to the pin while Bill
Stephenson took home the longest
putt award. Ed Daer’s score of 39
held up for tow gross for the day.
On Thursday, Sept. 12 55 golfers
came out for the weekly men’s
night. Don Edgar and Trevor Hopf
shared the low rounds for the night
both posting rounds of 36. Edgar
also took home a longest putt prize
as well as Grant Currie, Don Watson
and Andy Williams. The closest to
the pin winners were Tony Barr and
Scott Helder while the hidden scores
were handed out to Wayne Wytock,
Brandon Rybicki and Russ
Danbrook.
On Sunday, Sept. 29 the
Wingham Golf and Curling Club
will be the place to be at the annual
beef and pork fall barbecue. Tickets
are available from any club member
or at the pro shop.
