The September meeting of the Majestic
Women’s Institute was held at the home of
Leona Armstrong on Sept. 11. The
meeting opened with the members
repeating the Mary Stewart Collect. The
monthly newsletters compiled by Kathy
Bridge were distributed to the members.
The minutes of the June meeting were read
by the secretary. Marie McCutcheon gave
the treasurer’s report. Correspondence was
read from Kabrina Bishop, Nicole Noble,
the Huron County Historical Society and
the Alberta Relief Fund. The roll call was
answered by telling about the different
schools you attended.
Yvonne Knight, district director, gave
her report on the district meeting. She
reported that the Women’s Institute Huron
County Rally will no longer be held. The
Huron County Rally funds were dispersed
as follows - $1,000 was given to the Huron
County 4-H and the balance was given to
the Children’s Aid Society. Ladies Night
Out will be held in Listowel at the
Agriculture Hall on Nov. 7. The theme will
be Fun, Fitness and Fashion. The price for
the dinner and evening is $30. All ladies
are invited to attend. Call Ruth Bauer if
you wish a ticket. The district still needs
an advocacy convenor. More changes have
been made to the Women’s Institute
handbook.
Craft articles for the Erland Lee home
gift shop are to be taken to the Guelph
Area Convention on Oct. 9 at the Wallace
Community Centre in Kurtzville.
Registration for the Convention is $20. and
needs to be sent to the District Secretary
by Sept. 20. Yvonne Knight will be the
area’s delegate at the convention. The
Perth County Rally will be held in the
Mitchell Legion on Oct. 31.
The UFO group is now meeting the first
Tuesday of each month. The October
meeting will be held on Oct. 1 at the home
of Edna McLellan. Anyone is welcome to
attend. Edna McLellan’s granddaughter
will be showing the latest Pampered Chef
items. Bring along your unfinished objects
and enjoy the food and fellowship.
Plans were made for a display at the
Brussels Fall Fair. A motion was made to
give a donation to the Brussels
Agricultural Society. Lunch was served by
the hostess and a time of socializing was
enjoyed.
What a week with the
temperatures rising to very
hot, and dropping to very
cold! The weather man was
more than right when they
predicted hot, hotter and
then cold. Many of the folks
I talked to on Friday
reported that yes, they had
turned on the furnace to take
the “chill” off the house.
There’s no reason to be cold.
We also had to take the chill
off especially on Saturday
evening after being outside
for most of the later day.
There were many locals
who travelled to Port Dover
for the only (summer)
Friday the 13th annual
motorcycle gathering.
December will be the second
this year. Some of the area
folks included Bill
Glousher, Carmen Riley,
Charles and Abi Corbett,
Paul Ryan, Ken and Brenda
Dalton and Mike and Faye
Dalton. Next year, June will
be the only Friday the 13th
in 2014.
The Thames Valley Ridersheld a race day at the WaltonRaceway on the weekend.
They had a great turnout for
riders and enjoyed good
weather both days. A bonus
for the weekend was there
were no accidents at all.
This coming weekend is the
final motocross racing event
for the track for the year. It
will be time to clean
everything up and put away
everything.
The Brussels ladies slo-
pitch league held its year-
end tournament on Friday
and Saturday. There were 13
teams involved from
Brussels, Walton, Belgrave,
Wroxeter, Ethel and
Monkton. The array of
costumes was fantastic and
many of the local people
wondered what was going
on. Gangs of costumed girls
made their way to the
ballparks to enjoy the
games. Some of the
costumes included pirates,
Duck Dynasty, Where’s
Waldo?, angry dolls, bumble
bees, geisha girls, 50 Shades
of Grey, Wildcats, retro
Ethel, hockey jerseys, nurses
and lifeguards. It was a
good day with the A
champ winners, the
Twisted Sisters and the B
champs Wild Things.
Two of my girls went toToronto last week to attendthe Marilyn Denis Show.
They had to be at the studio
early and the traffic was
horrible in the early
morning. Alicia McDonald
and Kelly Jarosz went to the
show last Tuesday. They
enjoyed the show and it was
featuring a very talented 14-
year-old-boy who has an
incredible talent for baking
and decorating cakes. I was
at home enjoying my role as
Grandma, but watched the
show and caught a glimpse
of both of the girls. They
enjoyed lunch after the
show, a little shopping and a
nice day together.
Some local girls travelled
to Niagara Falls to
participate in the national
slo-pitch tournament on
the weekend. Lisa
Stevenson and Lynn
McNichol and Cindy
Carter from Blyth, joined
Lisa’s sister Lorraine
Blake and her team, the
Canada Packing
Parcel/Hayter’s team from
London for the
tournament. They had
played in three qualifying
tournaments, along with
Heather Dunbar and
Melissa Jacklin playing,
during the summer and
had earned a spot in thenational championshiptournament being held in
Niagara Falls. The team was
competing against 58 other
teams from across Ontario.
They started play on Friday
with one game, two games
on Saturday and played five
straight games on Sunday to
capture the National Ladies
Slo-Pitch Championship
title. They received jackets
and national rings for their
win. Congratulations to our
local girls.
