Volunteers make fair happen
Hope you had a good time at the
Brussels Fall Fair, our one chance
each year to truly appreciate the
rural life that is ours, to see some of
the produce from our community
and to realize the many people that
are part of the world that feeds us.
So for all the volunteers who donate
thousands of hours in dreams, in
planning, organizing and finally
doing the work that makes the Fair
happen than you very much!
Once again, I marvel at the
wonders that are in our world. Two
this week were local and then
interstellar. Jill, Grade 2 telling me
the great news that her classroom
has a Smartboard and of all the
wonderful things that can happen
and now she can blog! In this same
week it was revealed that Voyager 1
left the solar system, after 36 years
in our space. This is a first. The
spacecraft is out there, in a new
space with no further influence from
the sun. The wonder in both of thesestories is vastness of the newknowledge that has grown in the last
few years. Curiosity, confidence,
wonder and facts are the way that
the future is unfolding. It’s a whole
new world. For the retired set, our
job is to encourage these new areas,
enjoy our role in helping it happen
and throwing full support behind
new things that come our way.
Actually that’s a pretty good way to
live.
One of the things that we are not
doing well is expressing troubling
emotions. In our fast and busy world
we have missed the goal of sharing
our troubles with qualified others.
We are so busy talking about joy and
happiness that we fail to see others
struggle with anxiety, fear,
depression and thoughts of suicide.
Prevention is a major issue,
especially with teens as they seek
help in expression their own
thoughts. Mental health needs our
support. Sick Kids in Toronto has
seen the need in our youth and has
phone numbers and plans to
encourage people to seek the
necessary help to cope with their life
issues. Our area has help as well,
only a phone call away. So if you see
someone in trouble, ask if you can
help. We do it for all other trouble
areas in community, so we need to
get on board to prevent one
unnecessary death.
You have a day or two left to make
it to the International Plowing
Match, near Mitchell. Most of us
know volunteers who make this
large event happen, so support our
area of agriculture. Huron County
will play host and 2017 will be here
soon, so we’ll want all the visitors
we can get, so pay it head. And have
some fun doing it.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

Time to run
Last Sunday the Brussels Optimist Club and Brussels
Lions Club hosted the 20th annual Terry Fox Run in
Brussels. This year there were 81 participants in the run
and $5,664 was raised for the Terry Fox Foundation. Seen

The renovations have begun at the
Brussels Legion Branch. A
makeover of the downstairs ladies’
room is underway and hopefully will
be completed before the end of the
month.
It is Legion week across the
province and many Legions will be
taking this opportunity to showcase
their Branches. The Brussels Legion
had a table at the Brussels Fair with
material available about the Legion.
Applications for membership were
also available.
The Zone C-1 convention was
held on Sunday to kick off Legion
week. The convention was held in
Kincardine on Sunday. Attending
from the Branch was President Jo-
Ann McDonald. Eric Ross also
attended in his capacity as Deputy
Zone Commander of Zone C-1.
A report was given concerning the
pop-tabs program. The Branch in
Elora that runs the program reports
that at this time, 1,700 wheelchairs
have been provided from the funds
raised from the pop-tab program
since its inception. Wow! The
program continues and donations of
the pop-tabs can be made at the
Brussels Legion and they will be
delivered to Elora.
The early-bird program has started
at the Branch and Comrades are
encouraged to drop in and pay their
2014 dues. Comrades paying their
dues early receive a $5 discount for
paying early. Their names will also
be put into the draw for free
membership in 2015. The three
lucky winners from last year who
won this year’s dues are Jim Brown,
Dave Hastings and Sandra Josling.
The early-bird program runs for the
months of September, October and
November. Drop in soon and make
Membership Chairman Greg
Wilson’s job as easy as we can. The
Branch has 118 members and we are
aiming for 118 members to
pay their dues before the Dec. 1
deadline.
The One by One program is a
promotional idea to raise the
membership of the Royal Canadian
Legion. Each time a current member
of the Branch, sponsors a new
member for the Branch, their name
will be entered into a draw for a
Caribbean cruise. Encourage your
family and friends to join the
Legion.
The Zone Commander visitation
is at the next general meeting, Sept.
24 and we are asking for Comrades
to cope out and attend the meeting. It
is at 8 p.m.

Branch renovations started
The September meeting of the
Melville Presbyterian Church Guild
and W.M.S. was held in the church
parlour on Sept. 10 with seven
members present. Linda Garland
opened the meeting with prayer and
the W.M.S. Purpose was repeated in
unison.
The hymn, “Praise to the Lord, the
Almighty” was sung and Linda read
the scripture from Jeremiah, chapter
29, verses 10 to 14. Linda Garland
presented the topic “Do You Know
God’s Plan”, followed by prayer.
The hymn “Come, Thou almighty
King” was sung and the meeting
was closed with the Mizpah
Benediction.
Elaine Armstrong conducted the
business. Dona Knight read the
minutes of the May meeting. The
minutes were approved as read by
Mary Douma, seconded by Linda
Garland. The W.M.S. treasurer’s
report was given by Leona
Armstrong. The ladies that attended
“Cake by the Lake” at Camp Kintail
commented on how much they
enjoyed the day.
The Fall Rally on Monday, Sept.
16 at Ripley was discussed. The
National Women’s Gathering to be
held May 16-19, 2014 in Toronto
was discussed. The roll call was
answered with “a meaningful event
this summer on your life’s journey.”
The next meeting will be on Oct. 15
with Leona Armstrong and Alice
Marks in charge of the devotions.
Mrs. Armstrong moved to adjourn
the meeting. Lunch was served by
Linda Garland and Elaine
Armstrong.
