We are officially into the fall
season with the start of school. We
hope we still have some enjoyably
hot weather which will help along
the corn maturing and the beans to
start turning. Looking closely
around the area, you can even see
leaves beginning to turn. We can
mark two thirds of 2013 gone and
only one third to go, 2014 is just
around the corner.
Missed last week was
congratulations to Ross and Shirley
Smith. They celebrated their 60th
anniversary with an open house at
their home. The Smiths have four
boys, Greg, Ken, Rob and Jeff. Rob
lives in Alberta and made the trip
home to attend the celebration. He
will spend time visiting with his
family and his children Krista and
Michelle and their families.
Members of the McDonald family
attended a McDonald reunion in
Deckerville, Michigan last weekend.
Brian and Dianne Huether, Dave
Huether, Gary and Joan Ritchie and
Joyce Tipple, Bruce McDonald and
Linda, Marilyn McDonald and Karin
McDonald made the drive to visit
relatives of a distant connection of
McDonalds. Many of the uncles of
Grandpa Jim McDonald settled in
the U.S. A cousin, Stan and his wife
Catherine, came and visited with
Grandpa Jim and Edna McDonald.
With the passing of time and the
passing of the older generation,
connections were lost. It was with
great surprise when contact was
made by a granddaughter of Stan’sto attend a McDonald reunion. Thegroup made the drive across the
border to a lovely area of Michigan,
about directly across from Bayfield,
as the crow flies. They arrived at a
lovely old farm, believed to be an
original old homestead of the
McDonalds to enjoy a lovelygathering in the orchard. They hadset up a collection of ladders and had
pages of the family tree attached to
it. They said they had found a lot of
information on Ancestry.com
Our McDonald family took
pictures and information of our side
of the family tree. Each memberattending found their name andcircled it. Aunt Marilyn, the oldest
McDonald of our connection,
reports it was a very interesting day
and there was a great deal of
interesting info on the family tree.

Let’s take it outside
The annual tradition of Wawanosh by Moonlight took place once again late last month at the
Wawanosh Nature Centre. Erin Dolmage, right, led dozens of people on a night hike through
the nature centre after a brief educational course on animals that can be found in the area.

The Johnston family reunion was
held last week at the Belgrave
ballpark and picnic area. There was
about 50 or so relatives gather for
the pot luck lunch and social. Leona
Johnston Armstrong reports the
oldest attending the reunion was a
90-year-old lady who drove from
Elora herself to attend. It was the
67th reunion and a tradition is to
“play ball”. There were also other
children’s games and activities to
enjoy alongside the visiting.
We have added get-well wishes to
send out to May Bradshaw. She is
recovering from knee replacement
and suffered a fall and has broken
her hand. She is staying at her
sisters in Seaforth at this a time.
John and Pat Gillis have returned
from a 10-day trip to the west coast.
They flew to Victoria and spent the
day on the island and going to
Butchart Gardens. They report they
are absolutely beautiful. They took
the ferry across to Vancouver and
boarded the Holland American
Cruise ship. They began their
Alaskan cruise holiday. They
cruised the coast of B.C. to Alaska
and stopped at three ports. They saw
whales just skimming the surface of
the waters, but had no close
sightings. They had nice weather
although cool and overcast most
days. A little sun and a little rain but
a nice time. The boat provided great
entertainment nightly and they
made new friends during their trip.
They report a great trip but as
always, it’s nice to come home.
