Farmers’ market shows local bounty
Oh my August has been spent. A
new exciting month is now in
progress. The details have all beenworked out for the education crowdand classes will have started to settle
by now. The excitement level seems
to decrease as the children age but
the majority of them are still ready
to get back to a little routine called
school.
A few more camping trips,
Brussels Fall Fair plans and visits to
the plowing match are things that
start to enter folks’ minds as the
nights start to cool and September
turns up on the calendar.
The bounty of our area is front andcentre each week at the Farmers’Market and as the crops of August
overflow, we can see the variety that
is ours. Being in its second year, the
market board has been trying hard to
get people to support this initiative.
Oh yes, somewhere else is cheaper,
but perhaps you could think past
yourself and see that a healthy
community needs the support of
everyone. A gift bought on a Friday
offers a special piece that is not
available at the chain stores, that
same gift has probably helpedsupport a family and only you willknow it also supported our village.
.The last market is Thanksgiving
Friday (includes a United Church
bake sale) so find the easy way to
have pickled beets, pies, great
bacon, lots of gift items and
beautiful flowers and produce at
your home. For the gardeners, this
Friday the Horticultural Society is
offering their beloved plants to you –
all pots will come with planting
guide and care needed. So drop in
for a coffee and get some new plants
for your place.
September always brings with it
the return of business meetings for
the many groups, charities and
interests that are alive and well here.
So that is just one more hint that the
lazy days of summer are
nearly gone. Hope yours were good
ones.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

At the Branch
Branch renovations start soon
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The week began at the Brussels
Legion Branch with the executive
meeting being held on Tuesday
evening. There were 11 Comrades
present. The year-end financial
report was reviewed with auditor
Jacquie Gowing. Committee reports
were heard with the sports chairman
Rick McDonald reporting the zone
sports meeting will be held at the
Branch on Thursday, Sept. 4 at 8
p.m. Seniors chairman Deb Ross
would like to do something for
Legion Week. We will set up a table
at the Brussels Fall Fair and also
support the Alzheimer Coffee Break
hopefully.
House chairman Glenn Bridge
reported that the renovations will
begin after Sept. 7. The annual
visitation by the zone officers will
be next meeting, Sept. 24. Chairmen
with financial reports to be reviewed
should be at the Branch at 7 p.m.
The general meeting will begin at 8
p.m.
Brussels Army Cadet Corp
resumes meetings on Tuesday
evening. Any young men or women
between the ages of 12 and 17 are
welcome to come out and see what
Cadets is all about.
Come out on Tuesday evenings at
7 p.m. and find out if joining Cadets
is for you.
They will learn discipline, routine,
drill, respect and participate in
sports, basic survival, camping,
range and other activities.
