Total receipts for Brussels Livestock for the week ending Aug. 23 were 1,909 cattle, 869 lambs and goats. On Tuesday fed steers and heifers sold on an active market at prices $1 higher. Choice steers and heifers sold $124 to $127 with sales to $138.75. Second cut sold $120 to $123. Cows sold on a strong market at prices $1 higher. On Thursday beef veal sold at slightly higher prices, with holstein veal trading on a fully steady market. Lambs sold $5 to $10 higher. Sheep sold higher and goats sold steady to higher on a good demand. On Friday all classes of cattle sold on a steady market. Wayne B. Martin of Drayton, consigned eight steers averaging 1,449 lbs. selling for an average of $133.78. One limousin steer weighing 1,355 lbs. sold to Norwich Packers for a high of $138.75. Chris Smith of Brussels, consigned 10 steers that averaged 1,510 lbs. and sold for an average of $132.59. Two limousin steers averaged 1,510 lbs. and sold to Horizon Meat Packers for $137. Warren and Marion Becker of Ayton, consigned three steers averaging 1,407 lbs. selling for an average of $129.94. A group of two limousin steers averaged 1,458 lbs. and sold to Horizon Meat Packers for $131.25. Nathan Becker of Ayton, consigned one limousin steer that weighed 1,405 lbs. and sold to St. Helens’ Meat Packers for $130.50. John Vanloo of Bluevale, consigned 11 steers that averaged 1,454 lbs. and sold for an average of $126.95. Two charolais steers averaged 1,465 lbs. and sold for $127.75. Larry Reinhart Sr. of Mildmay, consigned five steers that averaged 1,538 lbs. and sold for an average of $126.72. Two red steers averaged 1,658 lbs. and sold to St. Helens’Meat Packers for $127. Art and George Hinz of Monkton, consigned eight heifers averaged 1,265 lbs. selling for an average of $125.79. One red heifer weighed 1,310 lbs. and sold to Horizon Meat Packers for $130.25. Southlore Farms of Palmerston, consigned five heifers averaging 1,279 lbs. selling for an average of $125.79. Two limousin heifers averaged 1,383 lbs. and sold to Norwich Packers for $127.50. Johnston Farms of Bluevale, consigned 41 heifers that averaged 1,382 lbs. and sold for an average of $126.82. One black heifer weighed 1,435 lbs. and sold to Norwich Packers for $127.50. Jeremy Sippel of Milverton, consigned six heifers that averaged 1,388 lbs. and sold for an average of $125.93. One red heifer weighed 1,510 lbs. and sold to Horizon Meat Packers for $127.50. Glen Bieman of Ayton, consigned three heifers averaging 1,300 lbs. that sold for an average of $125.47. A group of two black heifers averaged 1,275 lbs. and sold to Norwich Packers for $126.25. There were 189 cows on offer. Export types sold $71.50 to $82 with sales to $82.50; beef, $77 to $89 with sales to 90: D1 and D2, $54 to $63; D3, $45 to $52; D4, $37 to $45. Glen Bieman of Ayton, consigned two cows that averaged 1,370 lbs. and sold for a top of $90. Francis Dodds of Cochrane, consigned three cows that averaged 1,305 lbs. and sold for an average of $86.61. One gold cow weighed 1,215 lbs. and sold for $89. Ted Oldfield of Waterloo, consigned five cows that averaged 1,511 lbs. and sold for an average of $80.06. One limousin cow weighed 1,585 and sold for $88. There were 12 bulls on offer selling $72 to $92. Terpstra Farms of Brussels, consigned one holstein bull that weighed 1,590 lbs. and sold for $92. Seeson Ranch of New Liskeard, consigned one black bull that weighed 1,460 lbs. that sold for $90. There were 145 head of veal on offer. Beef sold $120 to $150 with sales to $173; good holsteins, $100 to $110 with sales to $139; medium holsteins, $90 to $100; heavy holsteins, $95 to $105. Lamar Frey of Listowel, consigned 11 veal averaging 826 lbs. selling for an average of $149.19. One blonde heifer weighed 845 lbs. and sold for $173. Emanual M. Martin of Elmira, consigned one Belgium blue heifer that weighed 840 lbs. and sold for $172. Will Drennan of Auburn, consigned three veal that averaged 730 lbs. and sold for an average of $149.61. One limousin steer weighed 730 lbs. and sold for $156. Lambs, 50 - 64 lbs. sold $140 to $240; 65 - 79 lbs., $150 to $212; 80 - 94 lbs., $149 to $175; 95 - 110 lbs., $153 to $171. Sheep sold $70 to $110. Goats: kids sold $50 to $130 per head with sales to $150; nannies, $50 to $125 per head; billies, $200 to $350 per head. Top quality stocker steers, 400 - 499 lbs., sold $146 to $212; 500 - 599 lbs., $145 to $179; 600 - 699 lbs., $149.50 to $170.50; 700 - 799 lbs., $141 to $164; 800 - 899 lbs., $139.50 to $158.75; 900 - 999 lbs., $134.50 to $152; 1,000 lbs. and over, $120 to $142.50. Top quality stocker heifers, 400 - 499 lbs., sold $143 to $168; 500 - 599 lbs., $135 to $163; 600 - 699 lbs., $129 to $154; 700 - 799 lbs., $126.50 to $153; 800 - 899 lbs., $135 to $148; 900 lbs. and over, $127 to $139.50. For anyone familiar with plowing matches throughout Canada, Brandon McGavin might be a familiar name. From Walton, McGavin has recently been spending much of his time in western Canada. He graduated this past spring from Olds College in Alberta with a two- year diploma in Business Management. He now works on a farm in Alberta. He says the farm raises pedigreed seeds, cash crop and runs 250 head of cattle. The cattle genetics are also marketed. Currently, however, he’s back in Ontario to visit family and participate in the Huron County Plowing Match. “This is the only low time we have,” he says. “You name it, I probably drove it,” he says about his responsibilities.
