The investigation eventually led
police to Brunk and his co-accused,
who were also living near Ethel. The
woman the pair was staying with
indicated that she had seen those two
items around her house and that she
didn’t own them.
The woman then returned the iPod
Touch to the victim, but was told that
the Blackberry Playbook had
been given to a friend of the co-
accused.
When questioned about the iPod,
Brunk admitted to entering the
victim’s home and taking it. He then
returned the item to her.
In court, however, Brunk insisted
that there was no “middle man” andthat he returned the iPod to thevictim directly.
Cornish insisted that because there
was no loss of property and that no
risk was posed to the victim that the
nature of the crime was not violent.
Hunter found Brunk guilty and
sentenced him to a six-month
conditional sentence and a three-
year term of probation upon
completion of the six-month
sentence, where he is to abstain from
the consumption of alcohol and not
associate with his co-accused.
ASSAULT
Curtis Wharton of RR1, Belgrave
pled guilty to assault and failing to
comply with the conditions of his
probation.
Grant said the incident took placeon March 24 in North Huron whenWharton got into a verbal argument
with the woman with whom he had a
two-year relationship and a small
child.
She said the woman then locked
herself in the bathroom where she
attempted to call Wharton’s family.
When she unlocked the door to the
bathroom and attempted to leave the
house, Grant said Wharton blocked
her from leaving, pushing her in the
process.
Then on July 22, after Wharton
had been arrested in connection with
the aforementioned incident, he
attended his former girlfriend’s
house in Belgrave, which he had
been instructed not to do, therefore
breaching his probation.Hunter granted Wharton aconditional discharge and sentenced
him to a 12-month term of
probation.
He was also given a five-year
weapon prohibition.
ASSAULT
Robert Powell of Listowel pled
guilty to one count of assault
stemming from an incident in
Howick on May 21.
Grant said that Powell was picking
up his children around 3:30 p.m. in
Fordwich when he got involved in an
altercation with his neighbour with
whom he had a long-standing
feud.
She said that after Powell picked
up his children, the victim drove past
and Powell followed him to hishome, getting out of the vehicle totalk to him.
After coming onto the victim’s
property, the two eventually went
nose to nose before Powell began
throwing punches, Grant said.
Through Duty Counsel Lynn
Johnston, Powell said that the reason
he pursued the victim was because
he gave him “the finger” while
driving past and yelling obscenities
at him. Powell said he went to the
man’s house to ask why he would act
this way.
Hunter issued a suspended
sentence and put Powell on
probation for 12 months. He also
issued a five-year weapon
prohibition.

• Keep aisles clear -- books or bags are tripping hazards and
can block the way in an emergency.
• Before you reach your stop, get ready to leave by getting your
books and belongings together.
• At your stop, wait for the bus to stop completely before getting
up from your seat. Then, walk to the front door and exit, using
the hand rail.
• Do not cross the centre line of the road until the driver has
signaled that it is safe for you to begin walking.
• Stay away from the bus’s rear wheels at all times.
• Have a safe place to wait for your bus, away from traffic and
the street.
• Stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop and
the driver signals you to enter.
• When being dropped off, exit the bus and walk ten giant
steps away from the bus. Keep a safe distance between
you and the bus. Also, remember that the bus driver can
see you best when you are back away from the bus.
• Use the handrail to enter and exit the bus.
• Stay away from the bus until the driver gives his/her signal
that it’s okay to approach.
• Be aware of the street traffic around you. Drivers are required
to follow certain rules of the road concerning school buses,
however, not all do. Protect yourself and watch out!
• When on the bus, find a seat and sit down. Loud talking or
other noise can distract the bus driver and is not allowed.
Never put head, arms or hands out of the window.
