It was a week of meetings for
committee chairmen to attend if
able. The full council meeting was
held on Monday evening in Exeter,
but President Jo-Ann was unable to
attend. Wednesday evening was the
Zone Poppy meeting in Lucknow
and Poppy Chairman John Lowe
attended. The membership meeting
was held on Thursday evening in
Clinton, but Chairman Greg Wilson
was unable to attend.
The fall membership drive starts
on Sept. 1 and all Comrades are
encouraged to drop in and renew
their dues early. The attraction of
saving a few dollars is one reason to
renew early, but there is also the
opportunity to win a free
membership for the next year. Drop
by soon.
Here’s a reminder about the One
by One Campaign. Every Comrade
who signs up a new member will
have their name entered into a draw
for a holiday cruise. Membership at
the Brussels Branch and across the
country has been dropping and this
is an initiative to increase the ranks
of the Royal Canadian Legion, so it
continues to be one of the largest
service organizations in Canada. The
Legion is the voice for the veterans
and their rights, who have served our
country in the past and who continue
to serve our country. Contact the
Branch or Membership Chairman
Greg Wilson for information about
joining the Branch.
We understand that Lloyd
Glanville is out of a Saskatoon
Hospital and recovering nicely after
having heart surgery. He is coming
along well and is expected home at
the end of the week.
The fish fry crew was at the farm
of Brett and Laura Fischer to cook
for their Pioneer Seeds customer
day. The day included a crop tour for
the men/ladies, children’s face
painting and then the meal at noon.
The crew had Greg Wilson, Barrie
Currie, Deb Cann and Jo-Ann
McDonald.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 12-and-a-half tables of players.
Winners were: first, Frank and Betty
Hulley, 75; second, William Nethery
and William Logue, 69; third,
Charlie Shaw and John Pollard, 67;
low, Dave Little and Marion
Harrison, 47; lone hands, Lorna
Ellis and Ethel Walker, six. Euchre
is every two weeks.
The Sunday night dance had a
very small crowd enjoy the music of
the John Heaman Band. The busy
weekend with so many activities
going on affected the attendance.
John Heaman returns in two weeks.
Get-well cards were signed by those
attending for our door girl, Mary
Bradshaw and for regular dance
attendee Charlie Romphf. Get-well
wishes to both of them.

Locals get gold, silver at national baseball tourneys
The last days of August are with
us. Just a few more chances to make
this a memorable month.
For our young championship ball
players visiting the Maritimes for
their elite games last week, their
memories have been made. Jessica
and her team won the silver while
Ben, Jack and Logan played until
they got the gold. Congratulations
for using your hard work and skill at
the Eastern Canadian
Championships. Your parents and
grandparents are glowing.
The last band of the season played
in Goderich park on Sunday
evening. The Ayr-Paris Band
members had toes tapping and folks
humming as they played through the
breezes off the lake. Life is good
with excellent music and a view of
lake Huron. This musical tradition
of bands on Sunday evenings has
been going on for years and by the
attendance it will continue. Several
folks from Brussels enjoyed the
time. The racing was good for RogerMcHardy on the weekend atMosport. A passion for bikes that
many of us would not recognize, like
Nortons, have a following that
makes for pleasant chatting tocompare stories, years, speed, partsand prices. Roger had such a goodtime at the races that he treated the
Culture Club to breakfast on
Monday.
Oastler Provincial Park, nearParry Sound, was our nest last weekwith Robyn and Jill. Our memoriesof this holiday will be water and
trains. To have water loving

A dirty job
Contestants at the mud bog events, both truck and ATV, got to enjoy the Walton Raceway
track as no TransCan rider would ever want to see it on the weekend: muddy, mucky, boggy
and downright dirty. (Jim Brown photo)
