HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2013-08-22, Page 15THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, AUGUST 22, 2013. PAGE 15.When tragedy struck several parts
of Alberta in June resulting in
extensive flooding and damage
throughout the province, the Calgary
Public Library turned to a Brussels
business for help.
The library’s book chute had gone
straight into flood waters, losing an
estimated 20,000 of the library’s
books in the process. The chute led
into the library’s sorting centre,
which had also flooded.
That’s where MacLeod of Gleneig
comes in. A company based in
Penticton, British Columbia, its
eastern administration office is in
Brussels and they helped to fast-
track a new drop box for the library
after a very successful fundraiser.
In late July, all city library
branches of the Calgary Public
Library held a book drive called
20,000 Books Under the Bow. The
drive encouraged people to bring
their unwanted books to their closest
branch so they could be sold off to
pay for new materials.
Ellen Humphrey, interim CEO for
the library, said, in The Calgary Sun,
that expectations were exceeded
three or four times over.
While the goal was originally
20,000 books, volunteers estimated
that the final count would be well
over 100,000 books.
Neil MacLeod of Brussels, CEO
of MacLeod of Gleneig, was able to
pitch in as well, getting a new 550-book depository made for the libraryin eight days, when the normalturnaround time for such an item is
typically three weeks, he said in an
interview with The Citizen.
Despite the call coming in to
Brussels, MacLeod said the
depository was constructed in St.
Cloud, Minnesota, and from there,
via Manitoba and Saskatchewan,
made its way to Alberta where it was
needed.
MacLeod says he was contacted
after the flood and he made a special
request in order to pitch in.
The company, MacLeod says, has
been operating for 18 years,
producing supplies for classrooms,
offices and libraries.
When he realized the extent of the
damage, MacLeod said he was more
than happy to do what he could to
help.

Gleneig can be found on the

Brussels company assists in flood aftermath
Triumphing over tragedy
While this Calgary-based librarian might be having a bit of fun in this picture, the June floods
in Alberta were anything but, leaving many people in tough spots, including the Calgary Public
Library, who, after an extremely successful fundraiser, reached out to the Brussels company
MacLeod of Gleneig for a new 550-book depository, which CEO Neil MacLeod was able to
fast-track, in order to get it to Alberta as soon as possible. (Photo submitted)
