Barons split weekend games
The Blyth Barons split a pair of
games in the Huron County Fastball
League last week.
Playing in Wingham Sunday
afternoon, the Barons were handed
an 8-6 setback. Playing a make-up at
home on Aug. 13, the Barons
defeated the Belmore Stingers 6-5 in
eight innings.
In Sunday afternoon’s contest in
Wingham, the Barons scored single
runs in the first and fifth innings,
added three runs in the top of the
sixth to take a temporary lead and
then added a single run in the seventh
inning. Wingham put two runners
across the plate in the first inning,
scored single runs in the third and
fifth innings before scoring four runs
in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Shawn Bromley hit a solo home
run in the seventh inning for the
Barons. He also rapped out a single.
Brian McNichol collected a triple
and single, with Mike Bromley
hitting a double. Adam Cronin and
Chris Stewart both rapped out two
singles with Grant Ditner
contributing a single base hit.
Darcey Cook started on the mound
for the Barons, with Adam Cronin
taking over in relief.
Veteran player Mike McDonald
said it was a great game. “It was a
well-pitched game by both sides,” he
said.
According to McDonald, the key
blow for the Hitmen was Devon
Connor’s three-run home run. “That
was the difference in the game,” he
said.
Against the Stingers last Tuesday,
the Barons tied the game at five in
the bottom of the seventh inning by
scoring a pair of runs. After holding
Belmore scoreless in the top of the
eighth inning, the Barons scored to
win the game 6-5.
The Barons scored two runs in the
first inning, added a single run in the
sixth and then added two more in
the seventh and scored once in the
eighth inning. Belmore put a single
runner across the plate in the second
and third innings and scored two
runs in the fifth and added a single
run in the sixth.
Adam Cronin started on the
mound for the Barons, with Craig
Elliott taking over in relief.
Veteran player Shawn Bromley
said it was a good game by both
teams. “This was the third time
we’ve played Belmore and each
game was close,” he said.
The Barons were in Brussels last
night (Wednesday) for a make-up
game against the Tigers. The Barons
host the Walton Brewers on Friday,
beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Blyth
ballpark and then host the Hitmen on
Sunday, beginning at
2 p.m. They host the Tigers in a
make-up game on Tuesday,
beginning at 8:30 p.m.

Swing batter!
Blyth’s Steve Cook could’ve torn the stitches off with this
mighty swing as he and the Blyth Barons earned a win and
a loss in away and home games, respectively. (Jim Brown

Tiley makes national U18 team
On Sunday, Aug. 18, Hockey
Canada announced the roster of the
U18 National Women’s team and
not surprisingly the Saugeen
Maitland Lightning’s own Shea
Tiley is on it.
Tiley, coming off a successful
season with the Saugeen Maitland
Midget AA team, attended the Team
Canada selection camp held last
week in Rockland, Ontario. By her
performance at the camp, it was
evident that Tiley carried her
Saugeen Maitland success into the
tryout. The selection camp saw 40 of
the best young female hockey
players come together to show off
their talents with Tiley being one of
four goalies.
Tiley, who lives in Shallow Lake,
Ontario has been a part of the
Saugeen Maitland Women’s Hockey
organization since she was a
Bantam. The Saugeen Maitland
Lightning play out of the Howick
arena and have girls from all over
midwestern Ontario on their rosters.
Now that the roster has been
chosen, Tiley and her Team Canada
teammates will be heading to Lake
Placid, New York to play a three-
game series against the U.S. The
series begins this coming weekend,
with games on Aug. 22, 23 and 25 at
the Herb Brooks Arena at the Lake
Placid Olympic Centre.
