Brussels’ Johnston, Marlins head to championshipsThe Palmerston Marlins Novice(U14) girls featuring Brussels’Jessica Johnston will be competingin the Eastern Championships in Stellarton, Nova Scotia on Aug. 20-25, after capturing the Ontario goldmedal in Pickering on Aug. 4.After a big rain on Friday, Aug. 2 the Ontario Provincial Women’sSoftball Association (PWSA)cancelled all games and pushed themback to Saturday morning. So an
early start to the day – arriving at the
diamond at 6:45 a.m. – Palmerston
took to the field against the host
town Pickering. Marlins won the
game 10-2. Next up was a hard
hitting North Oxford team which
ended up being a battle of the long
ball, with a final score of 18-14.
Next up was Cambridge who the
team sees in league play and have
had good back and forth games.
Cambridge scored the first two runs
of the game in the top of the fourth
inning and Palmerston came right
back with two of their own in the
bottom of the fourth. Play was tight
on both sides and nothing changed.
The game went into extra innings
with the international tie-breaker
rule in effect. Palmerston pitching
shut Cambridge down. Palmerston
headed into the inning facing a tough
pitcher, but made things happen with
great patience at the plate. They
managed to take advantage and
scored the one run they needed towin. As other teams played off andtried to catch up the back log with
one diamond almost an hour behind
and the other diamond 20 minutes
behind, the girls got a much-needed
rest and time to regroup and focus on
the next game. The winner would go
straight to the finals Sunday
afternoon with an automatic berth in
the Eastern Championships in Nova
Scotia. Coaches wanted players to
focus on the game ahead so no one
mentioned to the girls about the trip
east.
Another round-robin game was
played against league rival
Kitchener. A back-and-forth game
that had plays at the plate, double
plays and a home run was tied at the
end of the seventh. Kitchener got on
the scoreboard in the top of the
eighth with two runs coming in.
Palmerston had the same
opportunity and they loaded up the
bases with one out and Palmerston
hit a three-run single to win the
game. The girls are now very well
aware that they are headed to notonly a gold medal game but also toNova Scotia, regardless of whathappened on Sunday at the diamond.
The Palmerston Marlins went into
late Sunday afternoon with a 4-0
record. The Marlins would have to
lose twice – as it was a double
knockout and all other teams were
sitting with one loss. They faced the
tough North Oxford team again as
they battled back and won all three
of their games back-to-back-to-back
on Sunday. The Marlins were well
rested and eager for the win and hit
hard and fast right from the start.
North Oxford was spent and could
not put together the hits or the outs.
Palmerston Marlins mercied them
15-3 in five innings.
Palmerston Marlins will travel to
Stellarton, Nova Scotia to represent
Team Ontario in the Eastern
Championships. The team is
fundraising and accepting monetary
donations to help offset the travel
costs. Talk to any player or parent of
player.
Tigers drop games to Hitmen
The Brussels Tigers went up
against the league-leading Wingham
Hitmen twice last week in Huron
County Fastball League play and the
outcome was the same in both
contests: The Tigers came up short.
The game Friday was played at the
Optimist ballpark in Brussels
although it was Wingham’s home
game. Hitmen pitcher George
Armstrong allowed just four hits as
Wingham posted a 5-1 decision over
the Tigers.
The Tigers managed their lone run
in the top of the sixth inning.
Wingham scored three runs in the
first inning and added two more in
the bottom of the third inning.
Dennis Dewar had a double for the
Tigers, with single base hits being
rapped out by Scott McTavish, Justin
Pipe and Sean Cook.
Shawn Daw started on the mound
for the Tigers with Dennis Dewar
taking over in relief. Armstrong
recorded 12 strike outs for the
Hitmen.
Veteran player Shawn Daw said
Brussels didn’t get the hits when
needed early in the game. “Things
weren’t going our way tonight,” he
said.
He said that Wingham played well
and were hitting the ball well.
Wednesday night’s game was
played in Brussels, the Tigers home
game, and the final score was 7-5 for
the Hitmen.
The Hitmen scored three runs in
the top of the seventh inning to claim
the victory.
Brussels scored a single run in the
first inning, added two more in the
third inning and then took the lead
with two runs in the bottom of the
fifth. Wingham scored once in the
first inning, added two more in the
second inning, scored once in the
sixth and then scored three times in
the seventh.
Justin Pipe had a pair of triples for
the Tigers. Brian McArter
contributed a triple and double, with
single base hits being rapped out by
Gene Johnston, Steve Scholl and
Scott McTavish.
Dewar started on the mound for
the Tigers, with Daw taking over in
relief. Veteran player Daw said the
team played well. “We looked good
tonight,” he said. “We struggled in
the latter part of the game. We were
hitting the ball well in the early
going.”
The Tigers hosted the Wroxeter
Royals last night (Wednesday) at the
Optimist ballpark. They host
Belmore on Friday at 8:30 p.m.

Saugeen player selected
for U18 Women’s camp
On July 29 Hockey Canada
released the roster of 40 players that
have been invited to Canada’s
National Women’s Under-18 Team
selection camp, taking place Aug.
10-18 at the Canadian International
Hockey Academy in Rockland,
Ontario. Amongst these highly
talented girls is Saugeen-Maitland
Women’s Hockey Association
goalie Shea Tiley of Shallow Lake,
Ontario.
Tiley, who first joined the
Saugeen Maitland Program as a
Bantam age player, was
instrumental this past season
helping the Saugeen Maitland AA
Midgets win Bronze at the
Provincial Championship held in
Ottawa.
The 40 players invited to attend
Canada’s National Women’s Under-
18 Team selection camp will be split
into Red and White teams, which
will participate in several practices
and intrasquad games, as well as
off-ice dryland training, fitness
testing and high performance
classroom sessions.
From the selection camp, Hockey
Canada will choose 22 players for a
three-game series against the United
States’ Women’s Under-18 Select
Team, scheduled for Aug. 20-25 in
Lake Placid, New York. Following
the series, Hockey Canada scouts,
along with the team’s coaching
staff, will continue to evaluate
players with their provincial and
club teams during the 2013-14
season, in preparation for selecting
the Canadian team that will compete
at the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey U18
Women’s World Championship next
April.
The entire Saugeen Maitland
Women’s Hockey organization
wishes Shea the best of luck
entering the National Camp and
knows that she will make the
Lightning proud!
Hot arm, big swing
Brussels’ Ty Sebastian and the Wiarton Red Devils went all
the way at the Canadian Men’s Fastpitch Championship
earlier this month in Owen Sound. The team beat out
Napanee 10-2 in the final game. Sebastian earned five of
the game’s runs including three out-of-the-park home runs.
